Women with blonde hair have the competitive edge, being more aggressive and determined than redheads and brunettes, say scientists.

Fair-haired women, whether natural or out of a bottle, display a warlike streak when fighting battles to get their own way, findings suggest.

The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences work might explain why many leading women are blonde.

The University of California team studied 156 female students.

Blonde ambition

They found blondes were used to getting more attention and being treated better by others.

They may not even realise they are treated like a princess
Lead researcher Aaron Sell

The researchers believe this sense of entitlement is what makes them more willing to "go to war" over an issue.

Lead researcher Aaron Sell said: "We expected blondes to feel more entitled than other young women - this is southern California, the natural habitat of the privileged blonde.

"What we did not expect to find was how much more warlike they are than their peers on campus."

His research found that the more "special" a woman felt, typically the blondes, the more likely they were to get angry to reach social goals.

Even those who dyed their hair blonde took on a natural blonde's attributes.

However, the blondes were less likely than brunettes or redheads to get into a fight themselves - possibly to ensure they preserved their looks.

'Princess' effect

Dr Sell said he suspected that blondes existed in a "bubble", where they had been treated better than other people for so long they did not realise that men, in particular, were more deferential towards them than other women.

"They may not even realise they are treated like a princess," he said.

Scientists say there is some suggestion that men are naturally drawn to women with fairer hair.

Cavemen are said to have preferred blonde mates because fair hair was an indication of higher levels of oestrogen and fertility.

But while being blonde might boost your social life, it could damage your career prospects, say other researchers.

A recent study found blonde females earned far less, on average, than darker-haired women.

Consultant psychologist Ingrid Collins of The London Medical Centre said the latest findings were interesting but should be interpreted with caution.

"People do tend to buy into and live up to stereotypes.

"But this is a small study on a very limited sample group so it is not possible to generalise."

This made me laugh! Being blonde certainly has never made me feel like a princess…

When I was blonde people were more surprised by my intelligence and I did find it harder to progress in work as they put me into a stereotype. I don't get so many whistles and beeps now I dye my hair black lol xx

This is true for anyone that looks beautiful, male or female, it's assumed that they are only their "looks", that they're good-looking not smart nor capable...until proven otherwise, and even then, people generally chalk it up to a "lucky guess" not actual intelligence...I guess it's just hard to believe that someone with beauty can also have brains...definite profiling/stereotyping going on as well.

It is interesting what blonde hair does to a lot of men. I remember seeing a interview with Sandra Bullock and she was talking about how she dyed her hair blonde for a movie. She said everyone started looking at her differently and treating her nicer. She said even long time friends started looking at her in a sexual way.

I am not surprised that so many people think this way, we live in a very narrow minded world, but the other side- there are many women that have the looks and purposely pretend to be dense because men are suckers for ‘dumb blondes’… but if you have to actually prove your intelligence then I think the problem actually resides within and not the stereotype mentality.

I've never had to prove my intelligence, just it was harder to be taken seriously or it took them longer to notice as they didn't think I could be smart lol

Leah, you should not allow anyone to treat you that way, when you know what you are capable of, demand it, not through your voice, but through your spirit and you will never have to endure someone looking at your ladies while you are speaking.. I have a friend who is incredibly beautiful, blonde and all that, and she is also the most direct person I know, she has said many times to men, hey look up here, my ladies don’t talk…this really brings them to reality, because when you let them away with it, you are also accepting it…

Having the same dilemma since my teens AJ I will say that in my experience  the ladies do indeed get spoken too.

On another note.....  It's been my observation that people with blue eyes are taken less seriously in general.

ive noticed that, over here, girls of all haircolor obsess over sex. AND it is very uncommon to find a open minded intelligent female young adult. its the older ladies that are better they dont all just want your peanuts. i do blame the media for this obsession.

I blame men for that, a lot of young men speak to young women like toys, pieces of meat and the only way a young woman can grab the attention of a young male is to express herself more sexually.

I guess with the help of a cell-phone ?  Times are changed.

All young people that I see now, are electronic zombies with add-on equipment.

Octahedron, this is stereotyping, I agree the younger generations are complex but I know many personally that are wonderful and intelligent.

MN,

It looks like I am totally in the ‘don’t take serious’ category. Blue eyes blonde hair! LOL.
