Freezing weather is on the way from Russia ââ¬â putting Britain on course for its coldest winter in 13 years.
The chill will sweep in from the east at the start of next week, bringing freezing daytime temperatures and snow.
High winds will make it feel even colder.
Snow and frost across much of the UK will see a return of the dangerous driving conditions that caused havoc earlier this month.
A spokesman for forecaster MeteoGroup said yesterday: ââ¬ËChill winds from the continent will start to be felt across the south and east in the next couple of days, before a blast of bitterly cold air from western Russia sends the mercury plunging during Sunday night and the early part of next week.ââ¬â¢
He added: ââ¬ËThere are growing signs that heavy snow showers will accompany this frigid air during Monday and Tuesday, more especially-across southern and eastern parts of England.
ââ¬ËTemperatures in the first half of next week are unlikely to be as low as they were in early January but will struggle to rise above freezing by day and will drop several degrees below at night, with a significant wind chill adding to the cold.ââ¬â¢
With below-average temperatures in December and January and a freezing start to February expected, the spokesman said the winter months have not been so cold since
This month began with lows of ââ¬â13c (9f), with the first 12 days 2.3c (4.2f) colder than the average for 1971 to 2000.
But the weather has been even worse in mainland Europe, which suffered its fiercest storm in a decade last weekend. Winds of up to 114mph destroyed houses, roads and power lines and killed at least 15 people in France and Spain.
The U.S. is currently shivering under a vicious winter storm that has claimed 20 lives
