I saw this on the news and I was amazed that 5 people stood there and watched it happen and did nothing to help the old man.

5/14/07 Detroit, MI -- It seemed like a normal day for World War II veteran Leonard Sims, who is 91-years-old. While standing near his car a black man walked up to Leonard Sims asking to light his cigarette. Before Sims knew what was happening, he felt the knuckles of a 22-year-old black man crash against his face almost two dozen times, rapidly, and maliciously.
Sims explains in an interview to CBS 2 News what had happened: "He wanted a light for a cigarette. Just at that time, he threw a punch at me." (Leonard Sims to CBS 2 News).
In the video, which is located at http://wcbstv.com/topstories/local_story_134175140.html, anyone can clearly see that there is a group of people watching the assault going on, but not one of them makes a motion, nor a yell to stop the assault on the 91-year-old World War II veteran. The act of not helping can show the carelessness and lack of conscience contained within some people. Even if Sims wasn't a World War II veteran, he is still a senior citizen.
As of right now authorities have a suspect in custody, Deontae Edward Bradley, a 22-year-old. Bradley is currently being charged with assault intent to do great body harm and carjacking. Also, Bradley, if convicted to the fullest extent, may face up to life behind bars for his malicious act.
After the video it is said that Bradley, the 22-year-old car thief, drove away in Leonard Sims' car.
According to CBS 2 News' interview with the 91-year-old World War II veteran, the swelling on the right side of his face has gone down, and he is currently recovering. At one point the bruises took up most, or all of Sims' right side of his face.
It seems that attacking the elderly has become a fad. You might recall an article where a man attacked an elderly woman named Rose Morat, a 101-year-old for a sum of $33 total.
