Why have crime drama TV series become so popular? They've always been popular, but now they seem to dominate television alongside "reality" programming.
It seems now there are more crime dramas than ever! CSI, CSI Miami, NCIS, Law & Order, Law and Order SVU, Monk, Psych, Prison Break, Oz, and so on. It is mainstream pop culture. Many people I went to school with (especially girls) decided to pursue a career in Forensics, Law, Law Enforcement, or whatever else because of these programs. My own sister wants to be a Forensic Pathologist! She seems to think she will derive some kind of satisfaction from poking and prodding a dead person. When I asked her about it, she said something to the effect of "I love dead bodies."
I've never understood the appeal of Law & Order, or NYPD Blue, or any of it for that matter. Are these shows some sort of a recruiting tool? They obviously perpetuate mind patterns of division, hatred, fear, and injustice. They are of course also filled with sex, and don't forget the token shootouts. People don't flinch when a cop shoots a "bad guy" in the face and blood splatters out of the hole, but when Bambi's mom gets shot off screen many adults cover their eyes, or cry.
