CLAREMONT - A large crystal skull believed by its owner to have healing powers was recently stolen from Kindred Spirits, a New Age shop where it was on loan.
The theft has perplexed store employees and the skull's owner, Seal Beach resident Don Marr, because of the object's spiritual significance and the low-key character of the shop's regulars.
"We have zero shoplifting in here, and I have no idea why anyone would take something as lovely as that," said Persis Newland, the shop's owner.
The skull, which Marr named Solar Ray, had been on loan at Kindred Spirits for about four months. It was housed on an altar beside other items of significance in the store's classroom area.
The skull was used in occasional crystal reading courses at the store and was considered one of Kindred Spirits' prized objects.
"He was on an altar, and he just enjoyed being here," employee Kristen Nestor, who supervises the store's weekly crystal reading classes, said of the skull. "He participated in our classes.
"He's quite an old skull. He's about four or five hundred years old. He likes to travel and things like that. He was here for about four months, just enjoying everyone who comes through here."
About two weeks ago, store employees noticed the skull was missing.
A police report was filed by Marr last week, but police so far haven't had any luck tracking down the skull.
Solid quartz crystal skulls such as Solar Ray are believed by some to have spiritual significance, attributed to their age and the rare material they are made out of.
Most skulls are believed to originate in Brazil, and some believe they were hand-made hundreds or thousands of years ago over several generations, Marr said.
The legend surrounding the largest of the crystal skulls is that they were produced by people from Atlantis and buried in Central and South America before the collapse of Atlantis, Marr said.
If all are collected, the skulls - believed to number about a dozen - will reveal a seemingly infinite amount of information, Marr said.
"There will be a time in human history when they will be found," Marr said. "Then the true story about their origins will come out. It's almost like the consciousness is not ready to receive information of this ilk yet."
The legend surrounding the skulls has been incorporated into the plot of the forthcoming fourth installment of the Indiana Jones film series.
Newland, the store owner, thinks the attention the skulls have received as a result of the film may have prompted the theft.
"Someone must have thought about it in that term, connected with the movie or something," Newland said. "I have no idea why someone would take that and not the other things that are equally valuable on the altar."
Marr said a person with the ability to communicate with crystal objects told him that Solar Ray was hand-made about 500 years ago in Brazil.
Marr said he purchased the skull at a convention in Anaheim seven years ago for about $500. According to Marr, the same crystal reader told him the skull had healing powers.
Claremont police, however, are treating the lost skull as if it were any other stolen object, said Lt. Shelly Vander Veen.
"As far as we're concerned, it's just an object," she said. "But at Kindred Spirits, it apparently was used in a channeling class in which people that go to the class talk and give information into the skull."
