By FRANK LANDRY -- Sun Media
Paul Elder has gone from being mayor of a Saskatchewan city to an in-demand psychic who's used his abilities to help locate missing children.
He said he also routinely advises a U.S.-based hedge fund on fluctuations in world financial markets.
"I'm in awe of this whole thing," Elder told Sun Media yesterday, acknowledging there are skeptics out there. "For me, it's not a matter of having to prove anything. I know it exists."
But Elder wasn't always so eager to talk about his ability, which he said he became aware of following three near-death experiences, including a near-drowning, a car accident and a heart attack.
The 56 year old, who's holding a lecture in Edmonton today, was the target of a bizarre sting of sorts in 2000 that made national headlines. At the time he was mayor of Swift Current.
Ed Lang, a Saskatchewan cattleman, and his son Doug, admitted during a trial they hired a woman in an attempt to lure Elder into a motel room in a bid to catch a compromising liaison on camera. The woman posed as a reporter from Maclean's magazine.
The Langs were later acquitted on charges of conspiracy to commit extortion.
Yesterday, Elder said when the woman called to arrange for him to come down, he knew something was up, and immediately asked cops to run her name.
"I'm psychic," he said, explaining why he was suspicious.
During the trial, court heard the woman sounded drunk, nervous and confused when she called the mayor to arrange the interview.
Elder, who now lives in Port Alberni, B.C., said he didn't want to talk about his premonition during the trial because he felt people would laugh.
Over the years, Elder said he's helped locate several missing children in the U.S., though all but one were dead when found.
He said he also advises a U.S.-based financial company but declined to say which one.
As well, Elder teaches remote viewing classes at the Monroe Institute in Virginia, an organization "dedicated to the exploration of human consciousness."
He said his colleagues include former members of Project Star Gate, the U.S. government's psychic spying program.
An Evening with Paul Elder gets underway at 6:30 p.m. at StillPoint Healing Centre, 11209 Jasper Ave. He's expected to talk about past lives, near-death experiences and life purpose, among other things.
