New software could help spot messages from aliens - and show if they are brighter than us.
The program can pick out sentences in any future alien transmissions by detecting language patterns.
All human languages obey grammatical rules and contain phrases of no more than nine words - our limit of understanding.
The software can spot these fragments and if they are longer, the aliens may be more intelligent than us, said Dr John Elliott of Leeds Metropolitan University.
