It comes as a surprise to some that there is considerable interest in astrology amongst the business fraternity. Yet those who acknowledge cycles are usually open to ALL kinds of cycles - those of the solar system included. Those who use astrology are also aware of the enormous developments in this field in recent years.
For much of the 19th and 20th centuries astrology was muddled with psychic phenomena and, latterly, psychotherapy. Astrology is, in fact, a blend of science and art. Understanding of the position and speeds of the planets is a science and interpretation of their position perhaps more of an art. Yet for many years the scientific aspect was suppressed. A direct consequence has been great misunderstanding - perpetuated so often in the media. Many times as I've given interviews for television I've been asked to put a crystal ball on the table 'for authenticity'! - which misses the point entirely of what's been happening in astrology in recent years.
The advent and then proliferation of personal computers, has meant that something fabulous has happened in the last quarter of the 20th Century: it has become possible to test interpretations passed down from one generation to the next. Is Mars' position in the sky really prominent in the charts of warriors (service personnel)? Does it's position at birth really say something about red-headedness or even hot-temper? As soon as chart calculation was reduced to seconds instead of many minutes or hours, it become possible to look at many, many charts in a day and to test theories.
These are still early days but, thanks to the sterling work of the Gauquelins, Suitbert Ertel, Nick Kollerstrom and many more, there is confirmation of ancient interpretations. More than that, on-going work is yielding ever more fascinating information about the relevance of stars, sun-spot activity, and even the role of black holes when applied to specific moments (horoscopes).
In short, astrology has changed. We are discovering that what was once viewed as 'psychic' is, more often than not, down to considerable experience of working with great numbers of charts. What is perhaps astonishing to some is that the astrologers of the 21st century have real interest in the physical attributes of the solar system and beyond. They are as interested in particle physics as in the astro-analysis of 'Eureka' moments, and in solar energy cycles as much as the more familiar lunar cycle. In real terms this means that many 21st astrologers are networking in new fields. In the process they are developing rapport with those working at the cutting edge in their particular specialities. The cross-weave of ideas should prove very interesting in the coming years.
Many of today's business-men and women employ a variety of consultants - some of whom are astrologers. They do this because the ideas work for them. Yes, there may be a 'personal' quotient to this in that the astrologers are speaking their kind of language. The point perhaps is that these are canny people who don't spend money on fripperies but on services which have value.
It could be argued that astrologers gained 'street-cred' when they forecast the collapse of the Soviet Union (Harvey, Baigent and Campion) and, around the same time, the market mayhem moments of 1987 onward. The clients who used those forecasts have come back for more. They may have their own views as to the correlation of market variations and the lunar cycle but continue to show interest in how these same cycles interact on the social and political stage and enjoy the interpretations offered by today's astrologers.
One cycle is intriguing us all presently: Pluto, has an orbit of around a quarter of a millennium. During this time it visits each sign of the zodiac (though not for equal numbers of years). It's rather eccentric orbit sometimes means that there are times when it is closer to the Earth than Neptune. As with all the planets, its elliptical orbit around the Sun means that it is also sometimes closer to our special star than at other times.
For the latter half of the 20th Century, Pluto was close to the Sun: it is now moving away. During those years ,the Earth became warmer - as happened when Pluto toured this area in the past. This fact is not sufficient by itself, but does lend weight to the argument that we might now be entering a cooler period and the global warming could now decline: facts which are of interest to any business people.
On January 26th this year, and as viewed from Earth, Pluto began its stay in Capricorn. This is the zodiacal area associated with banks. Whole books are written on the role of Pluto in interpretation of planet positions but, in short, it seems to be linked to death and regeneration. Anticipating this several years ago I suggested that bank stocks might fall around this time, that there might be a banking scandal, and that during the Capricorn years, (2008-2024), the nature of banking would change dramatically.
At the very end of January, the world woke to the news that the actions of a so-called 'rogue trader' in Paris, France, was causing wide-spread shocks in the banking industry. We then learnt that ill-advised sub-prime mortgages were the root of further difficulties in the banking sector.
Without wishing to sound negative, this is probably just the start of financial pain: a dress rehearsal for further calamities. Pluto doesn't arrive in Capricorn proper (heliocentric view) until July 20th and it's after that date that even greater shocks are likely to hit the world of finance. A couple of tricky eclipses in August, (if they too are repeating a cycle), suggests mayhem on the currency markets in August; adding to woes.
Business clients familiar with planetary cycles are monitoring all this with great interest - and of course, they are eager to know where in the world impact will be felt and which currencies could be caught up in any debacle.
It surprises many people to know that countries, like individuals, have their own birth charts. In some cases, more than one chart is operative. The idea that a geographical area is affected by the planets might sound bizarre and yet it's a technique that stretches back to antiquity and one which, having been put to greater test in recent years, is proving valid.
Most people recognise that the power and authority of nations increases and diminishes over time. Business people find this fascinating. It is now well-recognised that dominating commerce is now in the East and that the West is declining. The complicated cycle of Neptune and Pluto goes someway to explaining this with some people using this knowledge to help them determine in which areas to pour their resources and energy.
The popularity of astrology too waxes and wanes. In the coming 14 years we may expect is popularity to grow as increasingly there is show to be correlation between cosmic cycles and business and social affairs on Earth.
