DETROIT -- A ride turned into a harrowing, three-day ordeal for a 22-year-old Detroit woman who police say was held captive in a Toledo apartment by an acquaintance who handcuffed her, dressed her in a diaper and read Bible passages to her.

When the woman broke free and banged on the door of a nearby apartment for help, the occupant, seeing the woman in a diaper with handcuffs on her wrists and feet, thought it was a joke, police said.

Troy Brisport, 34, of Toledo picked up Shykea Boykin about midnight Wednesday in Detroit, after she told him she didn't have a place to stay, police and relatives say.

"He drove her to Toledo," said Minnie Boykin, the woman's grandmother. "She fell asleep in his car, and when she woke up she was in his apartment, handcuffed. Then he put her in a diaper and did all sort of crazy stuff."

Toledo Police Capt. Ray Carroll said Brisport tried to suffocate Shykea Boykin in between reading aloud Bible verses.

"She was pretty shaken up after she got away," Carroll said. "She went to one apartment for help, but (the occupant) thought it was a joke. I wish he had called us."

Someone did call police, though, and officers found Boykin in the parking lot, wearing only a T-shirt and diaper.

Minnie Boykin said her granddaughter escaped after her abductor fell asleep.

"I don't know if he had the key (to the handcuffs) on him or what, but she got away," she said.

Brisport was charged with kidnapping and felonious assault. He was arraigned Tuesday and is being held on $400,000 bond.

"She said she knew this guy from somewhere," Minnie Boykin said. "I told that girl not to get into cars with people."

Carroll said Boykin was not sexually assaulted, and he was unsure of Brisport's motive, although he said the accused kidnapper may have been planning similar crimes. Toledo police are contacting other communities with missing persons cases to see whether Brisport may have been involved.

"Everything was prepared," Carroll said. "He had air mattresses set up, handcuffs and a whole stock of adult diapers."

Kempton Brisport said his brother is being "framed, set up."

"He has never broken the law. He has no record," Kempton told The Detroit News in a telephone interview from Mount Vernon, N.Y. "We do not believe what is being said."

According to police, Troy Brisport moved to Toledo about three months ago.

On an Angelfire Web page, Troy Brisport waxes metaphysically on life and spirituality in his e-book.

"Ever since my youth, I have been interested in metaphysical questions. As a result, I have paid great attention to studying and observing a variety of religions, sciences and philosophical schools," Brisport says. "I have found answers that I would love to share with the rest of the world. This way the world may benefit from my work or I may be corrected if I am wrong.

"The world is confused. Too many people are looking for a hero, a meaning and most of all peace of mind. Some choose to run away from their family, friends, homes, or even themselves." In sections on the page, Brisport includes lengthy, uninterrupted examinations on several principles, including relativity and universality. He also quotes "Star Trek" and Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Brisport titled himself a philosopher, author, visionary and "unemployed scholar."

On the popular "LinkedIn" Web site, Brisport lists himself as the owner of Independent Knowledge Inc. The company, according to LinkedIn, is based in New York, N.Y. and is described as a writing and editing firm.
