Marchers pelt consulate with shoes

A crowd of about 300 people have marched in central Auckland this afternoon to protest at Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip.

Organiser John Minto says the the march has made New Zealand the first country to stage a protest march today in an international day of action to mobilise the world against what he calls the Israeli massacre of civilians.

The crowd moved north from Aotea Square toward the harbour and to the US Consulate in Customs Street, chanting 'Long Live Palestine' and 'Israel/USA how many kids have you killed today'.

People in the march carried bags of old shoes which they hurled at the US Consulate. In parts of the Middle East, such use of shoes is seen as a strong insult. United States President George W Bush recently ducked and avoided a shoe which was thrown at him by a Middle Eastern journalist during a media conference.
