McCain chooses Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for V.P.
#1
By LIZ SIDOTI and BETH FOUHY, Associated Press Writers
17 minutes ago

DAYTON, Ohio - John McCain picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a conservative who shares his maverick streak, as his vice presidential running mate on Friday in a startling selection on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

At a raucous rally in the swing state of Ohio, McCain said he made his pick after looking for a political partner "who can best help me shake up Washington and make it start working again for the people who are counting on us."

McCain said that Palin was "exactly who I need. She's exactly who this country needs to help us fight the same old Washington politics of me first and country second."

Palin thus became the first woman named to a spot on a Republican ticket. "I am honored," she said as she stood by a beaming McCain in her first few seconds in the national spotlight.

In a fast-developing presidential campaign, McCain made his selection six days after his Democratic rival Barack Obama, named Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, as his running mate.

The contrast between the two announcements was remarkable — Obama picked an older running mate, and a man whom he said at the outset was qualified to be president.

McCain chose Palin, a generation younger than he is, and a governor less than two years, and made no such claim about her readiness to sit in the Oval Office.

Unlike Biden, who attacked McCain sharply in his debut last week, Palin was indirect in her initial attemps to elevate McCain over Obama.

"There is only one candidate who has truly fought for America and that man is John McCain," she said as McCain beamed. The Arizona senator was a prisoner of war for more than five years in Vietnam.

Palin has a strong anti-abortion record, and her selection was praised warmly by social conservatives whose support Mccain needs to prevail in the campaign for the White House.

"It's an absolutely brilliant choice," said Mathew Staver, dean of Liberty University school of Law. "This will absolutely energize Mccain's campaign and energize conservatives," he predicted.

With his pick, McCain passed over more prominent contenders like Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, as well as others such for former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, whose support for abortion rights might have sparked unrest at the convention that opens Monday in St. Paul, Minn.

The timing of McCain's selection appeared designed to limit any political gain Obama derives from his own convention, which ended Thursday night with his nominating acceptance speech before an estimated 84,000 in Invesco Field in Colorado.

Public opinion polls show a close race between Obama and McCain, and with scarcely two months remaining until the election, neither contender can allow the other to jump out to a big post-convention lead.

At 44, Palin is a generation younger than two of McCain's seven children. She also is considerably younger than Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, who is Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic ticket.

She is three years Obama's junior, as well — and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.

In its formal announcement, the campaign pointed to her powers as head of the Alaska National Guard and the mother of a soldier herself as evidence that she "understands what it takes to lead our nation..."

McCain has had months to consider his choice, and has made it clear to reporters that one of his overriding goals was to avoid a situation like 1988, when then-Sen. Dan Quayle was thrown into a national campaign with little preparation.

A self-styled hockey mom and political reformer, Pallin was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, population 6,500, until she became governor.

Palin flew overnight to an airport in Ohio near Dayton, and even as she awaited her formal introduction, some aides said they had believed she was at home in Alaska.

She is a former mayor of Wasilla who became governor of her state in December, 2006 after ousting a governor of her own party in a primary and then dispatching a former governor in the general election.

More recently, she has come under the scrutiny of an investigation by the Republican-controlled legislature into the possibility that she ordered the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire her former brother-in-law as a state trooper.

Palin has a long history of run-ins with the Alaska GOP hierarchy, giving her genuine maverick status and reformer credentials that could complement McCain's image.

Two years ago, she ousted the state's Republican incumbent governor, Frank Murkowski in the primary, despite having little money and little establishment backing.

She has also distanced herself from two senior Republican office-holders, Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don young. Both men are under federal corruption investigations.

She had earned stripes — and enmity — after Murkowski made her head of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. From that post, she exposed ethical violations by the state GOP chairman, also a fellow commissioner.

Her husband, Todd Palin, is part Yup'ik Eskimo, and is a blue-collar North Slope oil worker who competes in the Iron Dog, a 1,900-mile snowmobile race. The couple lives in Wasilla. They have five children, the youngest of whom was born in April with Down syndrome.

Hmmm,

Both Hillary and Arnie are not nominated as running mate for VP.

This seems something more important is to be expected beyond Pres. elections, because I don't see why Bush/Cheney would give up their power with these Pres. candidates.

Thus  ... maybe Osama (not Obama) and his Muppet Qaida Club or the Long Beard society from Teheran will give us a new fireshow like 09/11 in the next months.

I could imagine:

Baby Bush underground or in Nebraska again with Airforce 1, Dick Cheney the interim emergency President, Wallstreet closed for 5 days again, and a State of the Union speech against the axes of evil from Teheran (or Moscow ? ), and Hillary applauding "God bless America" to save Dollar and Dow Jones index.

Elections in this case will be canceled; so, Cheney will be the next president (in this case) .

As a governor Palin is the only candidate with executive experience. She has a reputation of not playing the good ol' boy game even within her own party.
She has actually brought the change to Alaska that Obama/Biden talk of doing for  the country .

Interesting choice IMO. I'll bet Hillary is ticked off!

I thought it was an interesting choice too. I suspect McCain picked a woman to try and get voters who supported Hilary. I’m starting to think that McCain will win the election.

Well the election is only 9 weeks away.We all know alot can happen in that brief time.

Many Afro-Americans who don't usually vote, due to feeling disenfranchised ,may now surface in great number.

It looks to be a lively time.

We have seen Obama on our news day and night with his strong crowd, celebrity support and I just can not believe how serious the citizens take the election, goodness people in the crowd are crying while he is speaking, it is like a cult following the way they see him and all other candidates, just the whole scenario is totally unbelievable!

Woo Hoo!  I love his choice just for the fact I wanted a woman President (Hillary) but looks like I settle for a woman Vice Pres... sure!  Too bad McCain is nuttier than a $28.00 fruitcake from Assumption Abbey. , - - Just my opinion there.  icon_headbash

On some past thread here, it was Richard who mentioned -- in the future a woman Pres. is supposed  to tell unruly, rioting Americans to cease and desist their violence.  I wonder if McCain passes on in office, she takes over and this fulfills what John Titor predicts.

Sily, I agree. This is a whole different scenario than I figured. McCain could die in office and Sarah could become the first female president.

Re: GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN A PHOTO JOURNEY
Dear Rayelan,
Have been reading your post for two years. Finally got up the nerve to
join. I live in Alaska. And I can tell you this. She was doing good in
promoting transparent government. Maybe too good. Now she is to be removed
from our state. What they must have promised her. She will be swallowed up
in DC. What a coup by the Evil Ones. She is out of her league there. And
we know that the senile Mccain does not like menfolk around him to
debate with. Look for several evil things to happen-the cracking open of
Alaska's great resources by the multinationals with the complicity of our
weak bought officials. Look for a big military industrial complex to be
extended here with the resultant wastes and excess troops that come
here, get excited, and shoot all the game they can find. It is frankly so
depressing. The average Sheople is welfare dependent on Federal Funds and
will likely not bleat a word in protest. Rayelan, could she possibly be a
Faction 2? I am so worn down these days.
Sincerely h.

Sarah is too innocent for Washington.
Please tell your readers to pray for her everyday.
She's the best thing that this country will ever know.
We need to do everything we can to protect her soul from
the monsters in Washington.

I don't have any problem with Sarah Palin sitting down across
from Putin. Any woman who can hunt moose in Alaska can stare down
an adversary like Putin. She'd just bring along her 30 ought 6 and they'd see eye to eye perfectly. You posted photos of Putin fishing. Sarah loves to fish too. I think she will make a great president... just in case.
I lived in Alaska years ago and I have great respect for Alaskan women. They are in a league of their own. Just wait and see what I mean about her!

Re: GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN A PHOTO JOURNEY
SO McCain picks the woman in red! Let's see if he can remember her name
rather than her breast size. Sounds like he's meant to lose... and I
wouldn't be certain Hillary is finished for 2008.

Ha! Say the Online Hillary Supporters

By Krissah Williams Thompson

The HillBloggers -- stalwart online supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton -- are fired up this morning by the announcement that Sen. John McCain has chosen Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

The common refrain: "Obama will regret not choosing Hillary now!"

Taylor Marsh, a Las Vegas blogger who developed a large following of Clintonites during the primary, wrote this morning that: "This is a move to peel off disaffected HRC voters. I guess McCain thinks they're stupid and willing to vote for any woman. Rabidly pro life, an NRA member, she's not exactly a champion of women's civil rights. We'll have to see where she stands on health care and equal pay. But one thing this does is keep Hillary Clinton in the forefront throughout the general election. We'll be hearing the phrase 'Hillary Clinton voters' until November."

A post on Tennessee Guerrilla Women, a blog run by Hillary supporters in the state, said the Palin pick will cause large numbers of women to "once again tune into politics. And karma will once again prove to be a total [pain] for Barack Obama and the party elders of the undemocratic Democratic Party!

"Barack Obama should have begged Hillary Rodham Clinton to be on his Democratic ticket. John McCain may well be about to bring that chilling fact home to Barack Obama."

On the group blog Feministe, Jill Filipovic, a 20-something New Yorker, worried that the Palin pick would "woo white suburban politically moderate female voters" from the Dems.

Palin "has a solid resume. She's not an old white dude, which makes McCain look less stodgy. Biden will have a harder time debating against her without coming across as a bully (especially since he's something of a loose cannon prone to idiotic slips of the tongue, despite being an excellent debater). She could potentially woo white suburban politically moderate female voters. She's likable and has a very all-American story. She has a son in the military. The media is already swooning over her.

"All that said: She doesn't have much foreign policy (or any other governing) experience, which puts a dent in McCain's argument that experience is everything. But... yeah, this was a smart choice on McCain's part. Damn."

No Quarter USA, an online hub for anti-Obama Hillary supporters, had this comment from Danny in Alaska, a disaffected Hillary Democrat who had pledged not to vote for Obama, on a news post. He called Palin an independent and said a "vote for MCCAIN IS NO LONGER A PROTEST VOTE! I want bumper stickers."
