Millions Affected by Snow, Ice and Rain
#1
accuweather.com

Two storms continue to impact millions of travelers and residents in the Northeast and the Northwest tonight.

A potent winter storm continues to spread a dangerous mix of snow, ice and rain in much of the Northeast tonight.  The storm is causing widespread travel delays on the highways and at the airports from the Great Lakes area to the mid-Atlantic, New England and Canada's Maritime Provinces tonight.

Delays continue at the major airports along the Eastern Seaboard, including in New York City and Philadelphia.

While warmer air changed ice and snow over to rain from the central Appalachians to southern New England Wednesday, snow and ice will hold on tonight over northern New England and the St. Lawrence Valley, according to the Winter Weather Center.

In portions of Pennsylvania, New York and New England Wednesday, up to one half inch of ice accrued on trees and power lines.

As this storm continues to roll northeastward overnight into Friday morning, backlash snow will be pulled eastward from Michigan and Ohio into the central and northern Appalachians. Meanwhile, rain along the Atlantic coast will diminish to showers or simply end.

Falling temperatures and a change back to snow over the interior Northeast will lead to a new batch of slippery conditions tonight, after residents and commuters in some areas spent the better part of Wednesday chopping and scraping ice from their vehicles, sidewalks and driveways.

Temperatures will drop below freezing in the suburbs of Washington, Baltimore, Wilmington, Philadelphia, New York and Boston late tonight.

Untreated wet and slushy areas could freeze before dawn Thursday. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to be aware of areas of black ice Thursday morning. More delays may ensue Thursday morning as a result.

As a new swath of snow will begin to spread eastward across the northern Plains, a continuing stream of Pacific moisture through Thursday could trigger potentially life-threatening flooding in the Northwest.

According to Western Expert Meteorologist Ken Clark,  "This is a particularly dangerous situation from the Cascades on west and also in extreme eastern Washington, northeastern Oregon and northern Idaho."

Heavy rain will continue to fall across the Pacific Northwest tonight as Pacific moisture surges onshore ahead of a storm. Mild air flowing into the Northwest has pushed snow levels above 7,000 feet.

The heaviest rain will continue to be directed at western Washington and northwestern Oregon, including Seattle and Portland. Up to several inches of rain tonight will add to totals received through the afternoon Wednesday.

The moisture rising in response to the higher terrain could produce between 4 and 8 inches of rain on the western slopes of the Cascades, with the potential for locally higher amounts west of the mountains. The rain, combined with melting snow, could translate to 10- to 20-inches of liquid.

The Severe Weather Center lists the numerous winter storm- and flood-related watches and warnings in effect from the Northwest coast to the eastern slopes of the northern Rockies.

The heavy rain will combine with runoff from melting snow to cause rapid rises of streams and rivers. Several waterways west of the Cascades were already flooded as of Wednesday afternoon.
