"October 15: Starting on October 10 an interesting series of earthquakes has been occurring in the upper Baezaeko River region, about 100km west of Quesnel, BC. More than 100 microearthquakes have occurred in this earthquake swarm as of 8 a.m. PDT October 15. These earthquakes are deep in the Earth's crust and none have been reported felt. This region is a known volcanic zone. The earthquakes are located about 20 km to the west of Nazko Cone which last erupted about 7000 years ago. These earthquakes may be related to magma movement at depth, or they may be related to crustal stresses. At this time, there is no evidence to suggest a volcanic eruption is likely. Monitoring of the situation continues, and updates will be provided as new information comes available"
I just saw it reported on TV, (local vancouver channel) with more news to come at 11:00.
PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. -- Seismologists are keeping a close eye on a spot near a dormant volcano about 150 km southwest of Prince George where eight small earthquakes have been recorded in two days.
The first quake was recorded on Tuesday evening and the latest on Thursday.
They happened about 20 km west of the Nazko Cone, a small tree-covered volcano that last erupted about 7,200 years ago.
The earthquakes ranged from 2.8 to 3.2 on the Richter scale - strong enough that anyone in the immediate area would have felt them - and appeared to be 20 to 25 km below the earth's surface.
Volcanologist Catherine Hickson says 25 km is about the depth magma would be expected to pool and make its way to the earth's surface.
