As there doesn't exist the state of unconscious, it implies that there can't exist the perception of nothingness than as such two terms are almost synonyms.
What Stewart means is probably that even we are "unconscious" there are other parts of our psychological make-up that are active.
There do exist hyperspace exercise called the Blank Thoughts or something similar. Maybe you should search for that. It is used to literally "restart" mind-patterns and should not be used very often as it could create some confusion because "thinking about nothing" is not really the natural mind state.
