Interesting. I checked out both links and still don't really understand what's happening.

The art students at RIT even admitted to creating this illusion-hoax similar to the Blair Witch Project. 

It was convincing - the emotions seems genuine and they pulled off "pulling our leg".

Just the pitch of the staircases alone would render this impossible.
