Tesco dress code bans customers in pyjamas

Tesco has banned people from shopping in their pyjamas after complaints that underdressed patrons were making other customers feel uncomfortable.

The supermarket has introduced the dress code – which also forbids bare feet – due to a spate of people doing their weekly shop in their nightwear.

Customers at the St Mellons store in Cardiff, South Wales, are now greeted by signs warning them of the new rules.

They were put up in response to customers complaining that the relaxed shopping habits of some made them uncomfortable and embarrassed.

The new signs, headed Tesco Dress Code Policy, read: "To avoid causing offence or embarrassment to others, we ask that our customers are appropriately dressed when visiting our store (footwear must be worn at all times and no nightwear is permitted)."

A spokeswoman for Tesco said: "We're not a nightclub with a strict dress code, and jeans and trainers are of course more than welcome.

"We do, however, request that customers do not shop in their PJs or nightgowns.

"This is to avoid causing offence or embarrassment to others."

She added: "This is in response to other customers. We would never dictate to people.

"But we have listened to customer feedback that it makes them uncomfortable and embarrassed."

Yesterday mother-of-two Elaine Carmody, 24, was one of the first to fall foul of the new rules, and was escorted from the premises by a security guard.

"He said it offends people. But I've never seen anyone offended," she said. "I just don't understand it. I go in other shops in my pyjamas and they don't say anything.

"You used to always be allowed in Tesco. But not now - it is ridiculous and stupid.

"I've got lovely pairs of pyjamas, with bears and penguins on them. I've worn my best ones today, just so I look tidy."

In the night maybe but who wears pyjamas out in the day? St Mellons has a HUGE rough council estate on it, says it all really. The bare feet thing is health and safety anyway.

It's a huge fad out here. I would say a 1/3 of all the people 30 and younger go everywhere in their jammies. I think it looks strange and I couldn't imagine myself doing it.

I think the reasons they wear jammies is part laziness and part comfortable. They wear slippers too. It's funny looking but I have to admit it looks better than people who wear giant pants with the waist around their knees.

Pyjamas in the US versus burkas in Europe. New street pictures.

Things can be different here, while shopping:

why not a white one? wouldnt that soak up less heat? they must be burning up in there. unless the have a fan or something to make the hot air come out the bottom..

and that would be the worst ninja outfit ever. it would get caught on the edges of tables or shelves and down goes the whole store and the whole element of surprise

I think the jammie thing is part of the "I just got dragged out of bed look" that young people today seem to prefer. It seems that today most young people like to look a sloppy as possible. They even have hair products called "Bed Head" to make their hair look like a mess. I don't really understand it. For some reason we went from a nation of people that always tried to look their best to a nation of people that strive to look like slobs. All I can figure is it has something to do with current mind control.
