The mailbox was at the end of the long winding driveway and across the road. Many a time a small child walked with the woman to "fetch" the mail . Following behind them was always a parade of various animals.
Occasionally in the mailbox, along with mail, would be a large folded piece of paper. The woman would carry the paper to the house and unfold it. There was drawn a pair of footprints and/or a bunch of numbers. Sometimes the child was with her when she and her never wealthy farmer husband would go into town to the shoe store and she pulled the folded piece of paper from her purse. Picking up a shoe she would lay it on the footprint drawn on the paper. She may have to do this a few times before she found one that "fit" but she always left with a pair of shoes for the paper.
The shoes were put in the mailbox . No packaging or mailing address . Just placed in the mailbox.
As the child grew older she understood that the numbers on the paper were body measurements for clothing and at times dresses and shirts etc. were placed in the mailbox.
The child soon realized the woman and her husband were contributing to the needy and preserving the dignity of the needy .
True charity truly begins at home.
