URGENT WARNING - Poison pet food - US & Canada
#11
LOL.... I've never seen a dog spit food out!!!
I have a spoiled 90 lb labrador... but she's not fussy. She'll eat just about anything. I had to pry a piece of styrofoam out of her mouth on a walk recently... she ate most of it though.

Thanks for the tips!

Lefty, I’ve seen dogs eat a lot of crazy things too, like light bulbs, nuts and bolts, garbage and a lot of other crap. I owned a lot of dogs over the years and they always ate whatever I gave them. This Basenji is the fussiest dog I ever seen. He’s fussy like a cat. He turns his nose up on tons of good food. All the dogs I’ve had in the past would be rolling over in their graves if they seen how well he is living. We were forced to make him food because there is no dry or canned dog food on the market that he’ll eat. The only dog food that he’ll eat is that dog food roll from Natural Balance.

This dog food scandal has revealed the shameful secret of pet food manufacturers. That most brands are made by one company and there is little difference between them.

By Stone Martindale

Not only Americans adore their pets, the recent news of the tainted animal food has caught the attention of people worldwide who love animals.

The massive pet-food recall has so far caused the deaths of at least 10 pets is also letting consumers see the industry's well-kept secret-- that some of most premium pet-food brands in the U.S. use the same manufacturer that processes dozens of low-price private-label products, according to Adage.com.

The recall affects 60 million products and sold under more than 80 brands, the majority of them retailer private labels.

AdAge reports that despite variationsin formulations, the canned or pouch pet food for Procter & Gamble Co.'s Iams and Eukanuba, Colgate-Palmolive Co.'s Science Diet and Nestle Purina's Mighty Dog brands have been caught up in the same recall by processor Menu Foods as private labels for retailers such as Wal-Mart Stores, Food Lion and Meijer.

AdAge reports nine cats and one dog's deaths are confirmed and reported by Menu Foods. Last night on Fox News 11 in Los Angeles, it was reported that 8 area Los Angeles dogs and cats were fighting for their lives due to tainted food.

"We anticipate those numbers [of deaths] will increase as the investigation continues," said Stephen F. Sundlof, director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine. The recall affects 60 million products in all, produced between Dec. 3 and March 6 and sold under more than 80 brands, the vast majority of them retailer private labels. He said the affected products include about 1% of all pet food sold in the U.S.

AdAge reports that in late 2005, a dry product produced by Diamond Pet Food led to the deaths of 100 dogs.

The scandal has revealed the shameful secret of pet food manufacturers. The Same stuff is repackaged and sold at a higher price.

"Branded companies for years when they used co-packing arrangements have tried to keep that their little shoppers' secret," said Burt Flickinger to AdAge, principal with the consulting firm Strategic Resource Group. "But now this whole scandal can dismantle the pricing architecture for branded products when consumers can see that branded is essentially the same stuff with a higher price point."

"Most consumers will give them the benefit of the doubt that they must have separate formulas for expensive Eukanuba," said Laura Ries to AdAge, president of marketing consultancy Ries & Ries. "In many cases you know with private labels that those products are coming off the same belts as the branded products, and in some cases there is very little difference. ... But most people want to believe in brands, buy brands and trust brands."

P&G said in a released press statement that "Iams and Eukanuba dry products are not manufactured at Menu Foods and are not affected by this recall. Only a small portion of our wet canned and foil-pouch products for dogs and cats are affected by this recall."

P&G is recalling 43 Iams items and 25 Eukanuba items in what appears to be the most extensive list of products from any single marketer involved in the recall, according to AdAge.

Besides P&G, Colgate and Nestle Purina were the only other companies to issue separate recall notices, according to AdAge.

A spokesman for Nestle Purina reported to AdAge that 5.3-ounce pouches of Mighty Dog moist food were the only products in the company's assortment affected by the recall. "We have no indication of any quality or safety issue related to that pouch product," he said. "No other premium products are involved or affected in any way. ... Mighty Dog canned products are not affected. ... The pouch variety is a part of the business where at this time we don't have the existing capacity at our facilities to make it, so it makes sense to use a co-manufacturer."

Dogs live off instinct and their senses and they are a pack animal, so DT & Richard your basenji is fussy because of his order in the pack and he does not know he is a dog as he is an ‘only child’!  Basenjis are one of the most intelligent dogs in the world but you guys have given him the chief position, it is who eats first in the pack, if you feed him first at dinner time, then he instinctively thinks he is the boss, or if he sits there with those cute eyes while you are both eating and you throw him bits of your dinner, this also helps him decide he is boss as ‘The leader eats first’! My brother in-law had a basenji and he was not allowed to smoke his cigarettes, the dog hated the smell, if he lit one up the dog would be in his face and make this weird noise until he put it out, and he would only eat BBQ meat, he was also an only child!

Yes, Sily, the new avatar is the rascal in question. And yes, he is my 'baby.' The only 'boy' I ever raised. And yes, he is spoiled. But he does not get to eat first. No matter what food I give him or when I give it to him, he usually will leave it sit until night time to make sure that he is not going to get anything else that may be 'better.'  And yes, once in a while we do give him some meat from our meal, but he has to wait until we are all done before he can get his 'treat,' so he will just sit at our feet and wait - staring us down to make sure we don't forget about him.  He does seem to think that he is king of our bed though. He has to have his own down pillow just like us, and he has to sleep between us, with his head on his pillow, and tucked under the covers up to his neck, just like we do.

What is it about "Bitchin' Freezee's"( that's what I call them):D, that make people go gaga?!? My older brother who has is soooo macho, hunts etc. and his wife have 2. My brother always had big hunting dogs or shepherds and they weren't allowed in  the main part of the house let alone the bed. When they passed he and his wife got the two little bischons and they run the house!! They even sleep in their bed.

Local basenji story......This family had a basenji that was an escape artist .Whatever they did they couldn't keep the dog contained. He also caused alot of damage to their home in the process of trying to escape. They were always picking him up from the pound and had to pay a fine each time. Someone was so upset with the wayward dog that they shot him with a pellet gun. He was nursed back to health by his owners who decided it was probably better for the dog and themselves to find it a better home . Someplace where it wanted to stay.So they ran an ad and screened potential takers and settled on someone who lived in the country, @ 40 miles away, and  was someone home during the day. All was quiet for about 3 weeks when they began to get calls saying that their dog had been found (he was micro chipped in their name) but had since escaped. The calls reported him getting closer and closer to his original home. One day, headed home from work , in rush hour traffic,on a very busy road  near downtown, but about 20 minutes from her home, the original owner noticed a dog with a  cable tie out dragging behind it chasing her car!! :shock:Yep , it was her old buddy basenji! She stopped in the middle of 4 lane traffic and he jumped in the back seat .lol!!! True story!! Of course they had to keep him at that point.:big grin:

Dreamtime.... that is so funny the way bedtime goes - I can't help it - - > I love hearing stories of spoiled dogs.

This is how bedtime/naptime goes in our home:  Our bigger **Alpha Dog**, usually sleeps on the floor, by my side of the bed.  She guards me all night.  The two smaller dogs sleep on our bed, it's a King-size so there's plenty of room, but they stretch out in many different positions, but....hahahaha..my fav., is to see them on their backs with their legs in the air, snoring away.

Before bedtime the three of us will usually **sing** -- I'll start to howl and then the  smaller dogs will join in.  The singing usually lasts one or two minutes.  The G-man does NOT like the singing as it is quite loud.. and he is usually turned over grumbling and mumbling "Please stop that... don't start singing.... not now...".  The Alpha dog usually won't join in and if she is NOT in the mood to hear our singing, she will growl and chase the other two smaller dogs off the bed.  SOMETIMES she will join in with small howls..... but that is very rare.

I hope I haven't revealed any information that I'll wake up tomorrow and be embarrassed about.... oh well...  :big grin:  I'm going to work on getting my pictures together in the next few weeks.
