What's in the Stars for the 2010 Elections

(Oct. 18) -- Some swear by astrology. Others scoff at it. But with so much at stake in the November midterm elections, we thought we'd get one stargazer's read on which candidates the astrological charts are predicting will win or lose.

Former first lady Nancy Reagan blazed a trail for using astrology in modern American politics when she turned to Joan Quigley in the 1980s to help keep Ronald Reagan safe after an assassination attempt early in his first term. AOL Weird News continues that tradition this election season with one of the top young astrologers working today.

Shelley Ackerman, a Libra from Manhattan, is a former cabaret performer who has appeared on "The O'Reilly Factor," "Fox and Friends" and numerous other networks and shows. She has written for Beliefnet.com in addition to hosting her own astrological website, Karmic Relief.

We're not saying Ackerman can gaze into the heavens and see what's going to happen on Election Day. Instead, she uses astrological charts in much the same way traditional pundits interpret polling numbers. And if countless TV pundits can tell us in advance what's going to happen when we go to the the voting booths, so can fans of the zodiac.

So here are the astrological insights of a woman who follows the stars and their impact on the affairs of state.

As the 2010 midterm elections approach, politicians and pundits alike are weighing in en masse: Which way will the wind blow? Could the Democrats lose control of the House and the Senate? Or will the blue-state damage be kept to a minimum?

Shelley Ackerman is an astrologer in New York. She provided this reading of the 2010 election at the request of AOL News. You can find her work at KarmicRelief.com.
The astrologers among us are equally intrigued by and involved with the democratic process, and we turn to the chart of the United States and the horoscopes of the president and the candidates up for election for clues and understanding.

Will Christine O'Donnell beat Chris Coons (both Virgos) in the Delaware Senate race? In Nevada, will Sen. Harry Reid be "Touched by an Angle"?

What effect will Sagittarian Jon Stewart's "Rally to Restore Sanity" and Taurus Stephen Colbert's "March to Keep Fear Alive" on Oct. 30 have on Election Day? And will the man with a tan, Scorpio John Boehner, shed his minority whip status and take over as speaker of the House?

The United States was "born" on July 4, 1776, at 5:10 p.m. in Philadelphia. At present the U.S. chart, which has the sun in Cancer, moon in Aquarius and Sagittarius rising, is under more planetary stress than usual: Our natal Cancerian planets are being challenged by Pluto in Capricorn, the transit that led to the 1776 revolution in the first place (Pluto was in Capricorn during the first tea party, which occurred in Boston on Dec. 16, 1773).

Pluto has a cycle of 249 years and the powerful planetoid re-entered Capricorn in early 2008, initiating a cycle of transformation, i.e. the breaking down and rebuilding of structures (business, political, economic and geological) that will last through 2024. Before it's over, we the people may reinvent the United States altogether. 2010 through most of 2012 is a time of reckoning, our eighth Saturn-Return, and for better or worse, we are in the midst of reaping what we have sown.

Astrological Politics

Here's the celestial skinny on some key races and players now in the spotlight. (Note: With the exception of Sarah Palin and President Barack Obama, there are no birth times available for the candidates, hence, calling these races astrologically is somewhat compromised.) But either way, we can expect an upset or two on Nov. 2.

Election Day 2010: Traditionally astrologers look to the lunation just before we go to the polls on Nov. 2 (in this case, the Oct. 22 full moon) to determine which party will fare better. And it's no surprise that the elevation of Jupiter in the chart cast for Washington at 9:37 p.m. favors gains for the GOP, but how many?

Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin: Born three and four days after the Beatles debuted on "The Ed Sullivan Show" (on Feb. 10 and 11, 1964, respectively), these Generation X Aquarians could not be more popular. In general, Aquarians are extremely well-liked and especially telegenic, and Americans just can't get enough of them (Oprah Winfrey, Tom Brokaw, Ellen DeGeneres, Jerry Springer and Ashton Kutcher are examples). Astrologically aligned with the United States' Aquarian moon, and buoyed by Neptune's transit in Aquarius since 1998, will their popularity wane when Neptune enters Pisces for the first time (since 1860) in April 2011, or will their influence hold through the presidential election of 2012?

John Boehner: Born Nov. 17, 1949, the dapper and permanently tanned minority whip shares his birthday with Martin Scorsese, Danny DeVito, Lorne Michaels and Howard Dean. This autumn (including Election Day) the favorable aspect from lucky Jupiter and Uranus bodes well for the Ohio congressman, who just may be the next speaker of the House. Although in favor of cutting Social Security benefits and raising the retirement age to 70, John Boehner has surprised many in the GOP by not supporting the continuance of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest, giving a signal that he may be more flexible in reaching across the aisle than we thought.

Barack Obama: Born on Aug. 4, 1961, at 7:24 p.m. in Honolulu, the 44th prez has the sun in Leo, moon in Gemini and Aquarius rising. Though the president will probably lose control of the House of Reps and several seats in the Senate, all is not lost for Dems, and the last two months of 2010 show Jupiter and Uranus lending support to Barack Obama's midhevaen. Translation: Keep on keepin' on, Mr. President. November and December could see you having your way on Capital Hill before those who lost their seats go home for good.

Christine O'Donnell / Chris Coons: The great state of Delaware has a choice between two Virgos for its next senator. Born on a full moon, Christine O'Donnell, the new tea party darling, has been embraced by the writers of "Saturday Night Live." Born on Aug. 27, 1969, days after Woodstock, weeks after we landed on the moon, her anti-masturbation stance and her admission of having dabbled in witchcraft make a victory unlikely, but O'Donnell could easily go on to "Dancing With the Stars" or success on reality TV. Chris Coons, born on Sept. 9, 1963, is my pick.

Jan Brewer / Terry Goddard: The closely watched race for governor in Arizona is between GOP incumbent Jan Drinkwine Brewer (might she be more at home in a distillery than in politics?) and Terry Goddard. Brewer (b. Sept. 26, 1944), a Libra with the moon in Capricorn, is favored over Democrat Goddard, an Aquarian (b. Jan. 29, 1947). But with Pluto squaring her sun and Neptune this fall, Brewer may want and need more downtime than the demands of campaigning and running the state allow. If she wins, she may wish she hadn't.

Harry Reid / Sharron Angle: Nevada's volatile Senate race between the incumbent Democrat, Sagittarian Harry Reid (b. Dec. 2, 1939) and the GOP challenger, Leo Sharron Angle (b. July 26, 1949) has baffled many pollsters. Though Reid will most likely lose his Senate majority leader status, will he be touched by an Angle and lose his Senate seat as well? I don't think so, especially with the deep pockets of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to the rescue.

Linda McMahon / Richard Blumenthal: Libra Linda McMahon, born on Oct. 4, 1948, has thrown more than $20 million of her own money at the Connecticut senatorial race, and though Aquarian Richard Blumenthal is favored, I'm having second thoughts about this one. Blumenthal (b. Feb. 13, 1946) was practically a shoo-in before he fibbed about serving in Vietnam. Bad move. Will Neptune give Blumenthal the same magical aura that it provided for Palin in 2008, or will Saturn in Libra deliver the victory that McMahon has earned (and/or paid for)? It's Blumenthal's to lose: One false move and he will.

Stephen Colbert / Jon Stewart: The beautifully timed twin rallies in Washington on Oct. 30 by Comedy Central Kings Jon Stewart (born Nov. 28, 1962) and Stephen Colbert (b. May 13, 1964) could be a game changer. Stewart, a double Sagittarius (his sun and moon are in the preachy and philosophical ninth sign of the zodiac), and Colbert, a Taurus with the moon in chatty Gemini, are exercising their respective rights to assemble three days before the election. Before it's all over, the combined star power of the Taurus Titan and the Sagittarian Sage may see many in the tea party going out for coffee.
