A monumental pyramid in the middle of nowhere monitoring the end of the world on radar.
An abstract geometric shape under the sky while not having a human being in sight.
It could very well be the opening shot}of an apocalyptic science fiction movie, but it’s just the U.S. military going about its work, building vast and other-worldly architectural buildings that the civilian world only seldom sees.
The Library of Congress has a fascinating set of images recording the Stanley R. Mickelsen Safeguard Complex in Cavalier County, North Dakota, displaying it in various states of construction and completion. And the photos are amazing.
