In today's ebonical world of denotative definitions, and mumble-mouthed media hacks, incorrect terminology has become a serious impediment to learning.
I myself have met "GuRu's" (G:reach the R:light) who cannot communicate the fundamental difference between "Me", and "I", or affect and effect, effectively.
Similarly, the rampant confusion, propaganda and misuse of "soul" and "spirit".
Spirit is the Idea of a thing, which precipitates it's manifestation- the essential piece of the One which has divided itself into the many (you's), and is, in fact, split- between your higher and lower selves; the lights above your head and below your feet. Your spirit is one of nine duplicates living concurrently in close parallel realities.
Those nine identical you's are divided from one of nine "more you's", which are divided from god-like "more them's" which are the split components, or children, practically eternal beings of energy more pure/rarified than we can imagine.
Solus (soul) is a term coined by "St'" Jerome, Constantine's translator, to mean "that which only God and Man share"- it literally means "only", one, or singular.
This word is a curse on mankind for all the confusion it has spawned!
The supposed definition of "soul" clearly describes Spirit, while the sound of it is directly related to the term "Suld", which Shamans use to describe the emotional experience of life- the joy and pain and hope and desire and satisfaction of living in a body. The eternal spirit component recycles by rebirth, the body recycles by being eaten, (mind is body) but the soul/suld goes into a tree, a river, or a rock if you die happy, or becomes what the chinese call a "hungry ghost" if you don't. Driving off wandering Sulds is a big part of the Shaman's job. Vaast numbers of people are afflicted by these creatures.
Worse yet are true ghosts/demons- the spirits of the dead who refuse to progress. These entities are trapped by the guilt of their "crimes" and fear punishment.
Thought forms are mindless energy constructs which attach themselves to human EM fields to feed, simultaneously infecting the mind with false beliefs/associations.
Devils, like Angels (same thing) are massively powerful conscious energy beings, responsible for the construction and operation of the Multiverse. There are four Universes, like there are four forces: water is the strong force, fire the weak, air is electromagnetism and earth is "gravity"- a terrible name for belief in the self.
These quantum forces express themselves through us, according to our "recipe"
To see your recipe, look at you astrological birth chart- it is an index of these.
So, Elemental beings from the fire universe are most commonly called "devils", the distinction being that Big Bad Devils are also divided into many little parts, hence the endless ranks and categories favored by the ancient scholars.

So, anyone of any culture wishing to call the god of growing crops, must first dial 4, the ZEUS, or THOR, depending on if he or she is greek or norse, or was most often in the past, or most recently in their individual line of incarnation, or by birth- blood carries the person's code, and while all the spirit beings work whole-heartedly and with conviction to fulfill their own purposes according to the will of the One who is above all, they are, by dint of their own specialization, opposed to each other.
