Australia offers 'best job in world' on paradise island

SYDNEY (AFP) – An Australian state is offering internationally what it calls "the best job in the world" -- earning a top salary for lazing around a beautiful tropical island for six months.

The job pays 150,000 Australian dollars (105,000 US dollars) and includes free airfares from the winner's home country to Hamilton Island on the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland's state government announced on Tuesday.

In return, the "island caretaker" will be expected to stroll the white sands, snorkel the reef, take care of "a few minor tasks" -- and report to a global audience via weekly blogs, photo diaries and video updates.

The successful applicant, who will stay rent-free in a three-bedroom beach home complete with plunge pool and golf buggy, must be a good swimmer, excellent communicator and be able to speak and write English.

"They'll also have to talk to media from time to time about what they're doing so they can't be too shy and they'll have to love the sea, the sun, the outdoors," said acting state Premier Paul Lucas.

"The fact that they will be paid to explore the islands of the Great Barrier Reef, swim, snorkel and generally live the Queensland lifestyle makes this undoubtedly the best job in the world."

Lucas said the campaign was part of a drive to protect the state's 18 billion Australian dollar a year tourism industry during the tough economic climate caused by the global financial meltdown.

"Traditional tourism advertising just doesn't cut it sometimes and we are thinking outside the box by launching this campaign."

Queensland Tourism Minister Desley Boyle said some people might question whether it was risky to let an unknown person become an unofficial tourism spokesperson for the state.

"I think the biggest risk will be that the successful candidate won't want to go home at the end of the six months," she said.

"This is a legitimate job which is open to anyone and everyone."

Applications are open until February 22. Eleven shortlisted candidates will be flown to Hamilton Island in early May for the final selection process and the six month contract will commence on July 1.

Demand for "best job in the world" crashes website

Wed Jan 14, 12:52 am ET

SYDNEY (Reuters Life!) – The chance to be the caretaker of a tiny tropical island in Australia has sparked so much interest around the world that a rush of applications crashed the website advertising the post.

The job, which offers a salary of $105,000 to spend six months on the Great Barrier Reef island of Hamilton, has been inundated with hundreds of thousands of prospective candidates.

An official from the state of Queensland, which is offering the position, said the job was created as an antidote to the global economic slump and was being advertised in 18 countries including the United States and China.

Local media said technicians had to restore the website (www.islandreefjob.com) after it could not cope with the volume of interest and crashed for several hours. Some sections are still not up and running.

Duties for the so-called "best job in the world" include feeding ocean fish, cleaning a pool and collecting deliveries of mail that arrive by plane.

The successful candidate will have to go scuba diving, snorkeling and hiking and enjoy at least 25 nearby island resorts. Thrown in is a luxury three-bedroom home and transportation to and from the island.

No skills, nor experience is needed, and there is no age requirement. The job starts in July.

34,000 apply for 'the best job in the world'Agence France-Presse

Published: Monday February 23, 2009

SYDNEY (AFP) - Tens of thousands of people from more than 200 countries have applied for "the best job in the world" -- being paid to loll about on an Australian island -- according to officials.

A late rush of more than 7,500 applications over the weekend brought the number people hoping to become "caretaker" of tropical Hamilton Island on the Great Barrier Reef to 34,684, the Queensland state government said.

The deadline for applications was midnight GMT Sunday.

"This has been a phenomenal response and certainly more than we ever anticipated," Tourism Queensland chief executive Anthony Hayes.

The most interest came from the US with 11,565 applicants, followed by Canada with 2,791, Britain with 2,262 and Australia with 2,064, the government said in a statement.

Among the latest applicants were famed US crooner and movie star Dean Martin's son Ricci and a Barack Obama impersonator looking for a change of job.

Candidates had to submit a video application in English of up to one minute explaining why they are uniquely qualified for the post.

The job pays 150,000 Australian dollars (about 100,000 US dollars) for six months and includes free airfares from the successful candidate's home country to the island of white sands and clear waters.

In return, the winner will be expected to have as much fun as he or she can enjoy -- soaking up the sun, swimming, snorkeling, sailing -- and to report to a global audience via weekly blogs, photo diaries and video updates.

The successful candidate -- who will stay in a multimillion-dollar three-bedroom beach home -- must be over 18, a "fantastic and charismatic" communicator, and able to speak and write English.

The campaign is a key element in a drive to promote the northeastern Australian state's 18-billion-dollar-year tourism industry during the tough global economic climate, officials say.

A shortlist of 50 applicants will be announced on March 2, the final 11 candidates will be flown to the island for interviews from May 3, and the winner will be announced on May 6.

Russia’s Julia Yalovitsyna fails to win world’s best job over her explicit videos

20.03.2009     Source: Pravda.Ru     URL: http://english.pravda.ru/society/stories...ovitsyna-0

Julia Yalovitsyna, one of the front-runners of the World’s Best Job contest, a resident of the Russian city of Petrozavodsk, was scratched from the list of applicants to win the job of the caretaker of Hamilton Island, in the Great Barrier Reef.

The message posted on the official website of the contest said that the head of Tourism Queensland, Anthony Hayes, said that the company had become aware of Julia’s the inappropriate video, which was available for viewing on the Internet.

"Tourism Queensland has decided to exclude Julia from the selection process under the terms and conditions of the job,” he was quoted by the Brisbane Times as saying.

Pravda.ru previously reported that Julia and her husband were found involved in porn business. Russian news agencies reported that Yalovitsyna appeared in a number of adult movies and did nude modeling for a porn studio. However, the ‘best job’ contestant vehemently denied all accusations.

The contest for the best job in the world, which is held by Tourism Queensland and the government of Australia’s Queensland, attracted more than 34,000 applicants. The winner will be paid $9,000 a month. The caretaker of the Great Barrier Reef island will be provided with free plane tickets and a free accommodation in a house with a pool and a golf court.
