Today I went to the Bank of America (Westminster, CA Branch) to dispute an unauthorized charge made to my account for $576.25. I was put on the phone with customer service. I told the woman on the phone that I was just going through my records and saw this charge which was made back in September 9, 2007.
"Oh, that was over three months ago. Sorry, but we can't do anything about it".
"No, you don't understand. Your bank made an error and I'd like you to fix it".
"You will have to contact the company who made the charge".
"No, you don't understand. I already DID contact the company and have given them a reference number. They checked all of their records and they have made no such charge for that amount on my card, ever. They seriously don't know what's going on and told me to contact my bank."
"I'm sorry but we can't do anything about it as it's been over 90 days."
"So you're basically saying that you're stealing from me?"
"No, but because it's been over 90 days we cannot do anything about it".
Thieves.
I then slammed down the phone and walked over to wait in line to close my account. When at the counter I said to Vicky:
"I want to close this account and withdraw all my money now. Your customer service is extremely rude and you are stealing my money."
"You will have to fill out some paperwork before you can withdraw this."
"Why? It's my money."
"I know, but ........ "
"Do you even HAVE the money here?"
She gave me a puzzled look.
"Let me ask you a question ......... If all of the people in Westminster came to the bank at one time and they all wanted to close their accounts and withdraw all of their money at same time, would you have their money here?"
Vicky started to get uneasy. "No. We'd have to order it."
If you go to the bank to physically deposit your money, and at a later date want to withdraw it all, there's a pretty good chance that the bank will not have your money and it will have to be "ordered". So where does it go?
"So basically you're telling me that right now everybody's account is just a number on the screen?"
Vicky paused for a slight second, "Yes".
So there you have it. Money is an illusion. You are busting your asses for a illusionary digital number on a computer screen. What would happen if say, today, everybody in the world decided to go to the bank and close their accounts? It would be the end of the banking system!
