Cat predicts patients' deaths

A cat at a US nursing home appears to be able to predict when patients are going to die. According to an essay in the respected New England Journal of Medicine, Oscar's predictions are proving more accurate than trained medical staff.

Patients in the advanced dementia unit of Steere House in Providence, Rhode Island, rarely have much awareness of their surroundings during their final hours of life.

If they did, they would probably hear the warm purring of a two-year-old cat named Oscar.

A detailed essay of Oscar's behaviour in the New England Journal Of Medical Science says the cat has presided over the deaths of 25 patients at Steere House.

According to the article's author, Oscar was rescued as a kitten from an animal refuge two years ago.

He does not usually care much for human company but every now and then, he snaps to attention, seeks out a patient and curls up in bed next to them.

He stays there paying attention to the patient as family members say their goodbyes and the priest give last rights, and then dissappears once the patient has died.

As word of Oscar's abilities hit the news websites in the US today, claims came in from across the country of people with psychic pets.

One man said he once had a gerbil who could consistently beat the spread on college football.

'Genetic'
But Dr Kirstie Seksel, a vet and a specialist in animal behaviour, says she is not surprised by the descriptions of Oscar's behaviour.

"Animals are very good at reading body language, so this cat's probably picking up that even though the people are older and they don't move around much, there are differences in their respiration rate," she said.

"I suspect there are also some pheromones or different smells that these people are emitting that we're not able to detect and this is what the cat has picked up on."

Dr Seksel says genetic differences could explain why other cats in the nursing home do not display similar behaviour.

"Maybe this is a cat that can actually smell pheromones and other cats can't, just like with some people - they're able to detect key tones on human breath and other people can't," she said.

"It's a genetic thing that you're born with - you either can or you can't, a bit like you can curl your tongue or you can't curl your tongue."

'Comfort'
Oscar's predictions have been so accurate that staff now call a patient's family if the cat appears purring at the door. Loved ones often have just enough time to say goodbye.

But nurse Mary-Lee Humphrey, who works the night shift at Steere House, says families have very fond feelings for the cat, despite his grim reaper-like role.

"The families surprisingly feel comforted about it," she said.

"As a matter of fact, I had a patient pass away and the family was not here at the time. They called later on and asked me, 'Was Oscar in the room when he passed away?' And Oscar was.

"If I didn't see it with my own eyes, I actually wouldn't have believed it. I think it's wonderful because he can sense it."

Maybe it does have to be seen to be believed but Oscar has not only drawn the attention of the New England Journal of Medicine, he has also been honoured by the Hospice Service of Rhode Island.

Other than that, he is a fairly average looking cat but a much loved member of the Steere nursing home.

Anyone with animals will agree that their pets are psychic because animals trust their instinct much more than humans, I often see my dog seeing a spirit way before I do, then the longer you have the pet the more human it becomes. I had a dog for 16 years and she was totally amazing and would talk to me telepathically, not a full on conversation but put stuff in my head, and now my new girl has just turned 3 and starting to get the gift to do the same. What about you DT, you must have some amazing stories because your dog is alone with you both?

I love Anubis.  I think Anubis has "I'm all that, and more" programming.

Well, I just updated my avatar with a picture of my fat boy taken just this month. The last avatar was when he was about a year old. He is now going to be 4 in December.

Anyway, as to whether I think he is psychic or not, well I know that he is. He is always seeing things in our house and in the yard that I don't see. There have been many times when he would not even move away from the back door after staring out at a spot in the yard. He'll just turn back to the door crying and scratching to get back inside the house. Those are the times that really freak me out.  icon_geist2 And then there were the times that he would spend hours just sitting and staring into the mirror.

But as far as being able to communicate with him telepathically, I haven't been able to do that - at least not that I know of. I have tried many times, but either he is ignoring me or he is not receiving me. icon_glaskugel

For some weird reason, I occassionally hear what cats and dogs are thinking.  Not always, and not exactly when I try, so I'm not sure what the mechanism is, maybe just what mood or spiritual state I'm in at the time.

Once my 18 year old cat seemed ill but I hesitated taking her to the vet because they always want to shoot her up with vaccines.  She was able to tell me what the problem was and we got it cleared up.

Another time, my daughter's cat told me how much her shoulders hurt at the same time my daughter was telling me how the cat was not always using the litter box.  The box had sides that were quite high and when they were cut down the problem ended.  We also treated the cat and she was much happier.

I went to an open house once where the dog came up to me and asked "Are you going to ignore me, too?"  Aaaww.

Aren't animals amazing?!?

DT,
It is not like human telepathic communication, the dog will send a message to you like he is thirsty or wants to go outside for wee’s, or that something is up, it is a cord between the two worlds of animal and human, this is how people become known as horse, dog or cat whisperers, they tune into the frequency of the animal on a different level and understand each other. Because your dog lives inside and is your friend that cord would have already been structured, and it is a very intelligent breed of dog you have. When you do not feel well the dog will give sympathy or sit by you, it is a whole different level of perception and energy. Dogs love unconditionally, not like humans, they just give and give and if you growl at them they forgive you straight away.
The communication is similar to their bark, you know how over time you become aware of the different tones of the bark, if it is another animal, person or danger- the tone tells you – the human – what they are warning you against.

Yes, AJ, I do have that kind of communication with Anubis. He'll just stand there and look at me and I will know what he wants. I suppose if he did bark, I would be able to tell what the different ones meant - kind of how you know what the different cries of your babies mean.

But I swear to you...he is such a big chicken that if anyone ever broke in here, he would be the first one out the back door. He'd leave me to protect him.

Getting back to the Oscar the cat story:

I've edited the heck out of this message because it contained just a little bit of information from Goro Adachi's site.  He discusses this news article about Oscar the cat and how it is significant for foreshadowing some upcoming events that may happen.  I just thought that was interesting.
