are you familiar with the Dhammapada- the actual sayings of the buddha? it's a small book, and very succinct.
although I Never say this, it truly is "the only book you need" to BE a buddhist- and fu*k practicing! you can get to the goal in less than two years if you're in the world, maybe six months if you're off by yourself. Of course, you have to actually DO IT, not just think about it and talk sh*t. Buddhism IS the cure for that- not christianity LOL.
