An unidentified flying object (UFO) disrupted air traffic over Zhejiang's provincial capital Hangzhou late on Wednesday, the municipal government said on Thursday.

Xiaoshan Airport was closed after the UFO was detected at around 9 pm, and some flights were rerouted to airports in the cities of Ningbo and Wuxi , said an airport spokesman, who declined to be named.

The airport had resumed operations, and more details will be released after an investigation, he said.

A source with knowledge of the matter, however, told China Daily on Thursday that authorities had learned what the UFO was after an investigation.

But it was not the proper time to publicly disclose the information because there was a military connection, he said, adding that an official explanation is expected to be given on Friday.

Inbound flights were diverted to the nearby airports in Zhejiang province's Ningbo and Jiangsu province's Wuxi. Outbound flights were delayed for three to four hours.

A staff member at the airport's information desk said the airport had "no idea" how many flights were affected by the closure.

At around 11 pm on Wednesday, a netizen wrote three entries announcing the airport's closure in

his microblog at Sina.com, but they were all soon deleted.

He posted an apology at midnight, saying the news had not been confirmed and asking those who had republished his earlier entries to delete them.

Update: July 10, 2010 - East China Unidentified Aerial Craft That Disrupted Air Traffic Remains Mystery.

OneIndia.com in New Delhi reports today that an employee at Xiaoshan Airport in Hangzhou said the July 7, 2010, strange aerial object did not show up on the airport's radar. “We should first find out how the craft owner got the approval to fly the object - even a fire balloon needs to get the authority's permission before lifting off.” So far no official explanation has been given.

July 9, 2010 - Xiaoshan Airport was closed for about four hours after the UFO was detected on July 7, 2010, at around 9 pm, reports the People's Daily Online in its July 9, 2010, English edition. An unnamed airport spokesman said, “Some flights were rerouted to airports in the cities of Ningbo and Wuxi. A source with knowledge of the matter told China Daily on Thursday that authorities had learned what the UFO was - after an investigation. But it was not the proper time to publicly disclose the information because there was a military connection, he said, adding that an official explanation is expected to be given on Friday, July 9.”

It has been established that there was an event  however the pictures being used for the story ,as I understand it, are unrelated to the story and actually hoaxed.

Comment: If this was a secret Chinese military aircraft, as authorities claim, why would they fly it over a populated area unless they wanted to send a message to the United States that it by no means has a monopoly on sophisticated black budget technology?

I think it's a  missile or rocket being being tested in China probably by their own military. The expended fuel creates the haze.

Why would they test a missile over a populated area? Doesn't seem very wise to me.

Precisely.

Precisely what? So you think the military purposely put it's people lives in danger? They have never shot missiles over airports before. Why start now?

In China that's not unheard of.

Give me a example where they have done this exact same thing before.
