Forum Software Upgrade
#1
Sometime in the future I’ll be upgrading the forum software here and I wanted to hear some member opinions about it.

WowBB is upgrading from 1.7 to 2.0 and it is a lot different than this software. I’m not sure I’m going to get that upgrade or not. The software is still in beta and isn’t finished yet, so it’s hard to get a good idea about it yet. It seems like they trying to blend a forum with MySpace profiles. Members will have profiles kind of like MySpace profiles. You can check it out at this link:

Code:
http://www.wowbb.com/beta/test/

Copy and paste it in your browser. I made the link un-clickable because it isn’t supposed to be posted anywhere because it’s still in beta. It won’t harm your computer checking it out.

There are 2 software sites that don’t like the new WowBB upgrade and they took WowBB 1.7 and added their own upgrades to it. One is called WowUltra.

And the other is called WowClassic.

I know some people like Rodrigo like PHP software.

Vbulletin.

MYBB.

Invision

There is plenty of other forum software out there to and I’d like to hear about too it if anyone thinks it’s better than what has been mentioned.

When checking out other forum software, don’t judge it by colors and backgrounds because that can be changed. Just judge it by the way you like using it.

Thanks everyone :)

I agree the new WowBB looks strange. It’s not like any forum software that I’ve seen before. I’m hoping the final version is a lot better. I think they might be upgrading the support forum to the new software because it’s been down for 3 days now. :?

Back in the day when I had a small forum, I installed Ikonboard myself and loved it.  Then I got hacked into twice.  That was no fun.

Then I tried phpbb and loved it.  There are like 4 zillion themes and all kinds of really cool add ons you can use.  I never tried vbulletin because I thought I had to pay?  But vbulletin seems to be used for some really popular and large forums.

Here's my Wish List:
  1. Members ability to *ignore* certain users -- I know this is doable on some forum softwares.
  2. Install at least 4 themes and let users pick their own theme to use.  Hopefully one will be called the "default" theme that comes with the forum software.
  3. The ability to use html or images in signatures.
  4. More smilies.

I like PHP too. I used it when I was a moderator at Rodrigo’s forum. I also like vbulletin because I like the karma system they have. I’m waiting to see what the final wowbb version is going to be like because they claim it’s going to run a lot faster than this version.

1. I know what you mean about the ignore feature. I’ve seen on it on other forums like vbulletin and wowclassic. I’m not sure if the new wowbb will have that feature or not.

2. This software lets you pick from 3 themes. I’m not sure about the new version.

3. This software lets you use images in the signatures but the image must be hosted somewhere else.

4. More smiles would be nice. I plan on adding more with whatever software I end up getting. The link you posted sure does have a lot of them. :)

I had a strange experience with NetZero that caused me to get the ball rolling on upgrading this software and changing hosts. For some strange reason I can’t connect to this forum or any other sites on WowBB servers using Explorer. At first I thought it was because WowBB went out of business because they’ve had their forum down for over a week now and no one knows what is going on. So I studied all the software and hosts out there and I think I settled on WowUltra because it would be the easiest transition because the software is similar to this. Also I like the idea of hosting with the software company because there will be less problems. So I’m in talks with WowUltra and might be upgrading this forum any day now. So if the forum is down at all, you’ll know why.

After I started talking with WowUltra, I found out I can use Firefox to connect to this forum and I realized the problem must be with NetZero because I never had a connection problem with Comcast. So I didn’t need to upgrade after all but I think members here should like it. There will be some new features and the forum should run a little faster. Cool
