Someone asked me about cell phones and monitoring, this is how I come to understand concept, and how it can be used for making sure people are doing what they are meant to.
Cell phones are capable of doing much more than known publicly, especially ones that run Windows Mobile 5.0 and 6.0 that I know of, because software can be written by anyone, especially the elit3.
When i first started technology aspects of what I knew, I had already developed a security system based on Windows Mobile 5.0 with securing homes and vehicles.
What it does is the home/car alarm is wired to a normal detection system. home can have webcam for movement detection, and when alarm is activated via silent or 'let everyone know', the alarm activates a cell phone to dial your cell in your pocket. The alarm is attached to a cell phone which has windows mobile 5.0/6.0, and anything that software can do, can be transmitted via handset to your cell phone in your pocket.
So essentially, if your cell phone starts the mp3 saying 'Car being stolen, alert alert' you pick it up, and then computer talks to you, asking to press keypad relating to further instructions. You can 'enable camera' which then activates camera that points to the drivers seat and takes snapshots of the person stealing, this can also upload images straight to the web, as windows mobile 5.0 has internet access, this can then be forwarded to e-mail of other household members, and even police with time/datestamp.
You could press 1, and the cell phone turns off ignition. press 2, and cell phone will activate GPS tracking via tomtom hardware attached to alarm system. Course can be plotted straight to flash/java on a website or using google earth or google maps to locate vehicle at its current position. You can even use the website to tell the car what to do next.
You can press '3' which allows communication to be opened between you and theif, this allows for recording of conversation and uploaded to your website, or to police, again e-mailed to your family, with GPS location detected via Google Earth/Maps.
Press 4, and it will lock the doors
There are so many things that can be done - all thanks to Windows Mobile 5.0, currently on my Imate Cell phone.
Original concept was a SMS based system that allowed cell phone to SMS owner, and owner replied via SMS for commands.
You could even use the mobile phone to start the engine, or unlock the doors when you get close to it, this is available due to the increase of IRDA and Bluetooth available on cell phones.
A software developer just needs to activate microphone via software based on 'power mode' of cell phone (whether standby, on call, GPRS activated etc.) and depending on these, it will transmit audio to website in mp3 format, and all is recorded. If you have a video call cell phone, then video or photos can be done as well. With audio, a speech recognition program just has to analyse audio, and text script will be stored on website with the audio.
Echelon based systems can therefore monitor what words you discuss with a friend, if you have a cell phone that has windows 5.0 or 6.0, even if the phone is not on a call, and even if its a face to face conversation - expect monitoring as its entirely possible since mobile is in vicinity.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is a standard Windows Mobile 5.0/6.0 API in existing system without adding extra software.
I decided not to go ahead with software, as business partner wanted to call it 'Dragonfly Security'. I didn't like that from what I knew at the time, however my view on titles of programming differ slightly now, and could have meant something quite powerful. That is also why he wants to use "Dragon and Phoenix' in current business name. I am however dropping that idea, but used his wordings for time being, however not involving him in the new concepts as we're totally on different frequencies now, and we disagree on vision of future.
