The Unholy Trinity of Evils

The Tree of Woe contemplates the three observable types of evils at work in the world today, and how the transformation from one form to another has distinct consequences for the situations in which we find ourselves today.

Read the whole thing there. It’s extremely perceptive, and it’s a model I use in my own attempt to understand the way in which the world operates, because there is an observable distinction between the various factions of the wicked that are not only at war with God and His Creation, but with one another as well.

The model may also account for what we have observed as the “Black Rider model”, since neither an Ahrimanic nor a Sorathic evil has any regard whatsoever for a Luciferic figure, no matter how useful or wicked it may be, and would not hesitate to dispose of it once it ceased to be useful.

Thinking Like a Spiritual OPFOR

From the field of military science comes the concept of the “opposing force” or “OPFOR,” elite cadres of soldiers trained and equipped to think and fight like the enemy of the fighting force to which they belong.

During the Cold War, for instance, when the Soviet Union was the nation’s designated enemy, the US Army faced off against OPFOR trained in Soviet military doctrine and equipped with simulacra of T-72s and BMPs. During the War on Terror, when Muslim insurgents in the Middle East were the nation’s designated enemy, the OPFOR transformed into lightly-armed skirmishers who fought like their real-life Afghani and Iraqi counterparts.

Today the emerging consensus among the sharpest thinkers of the Dissident Right here on substack is that America is fighting a spiritual or occult war. In this article I want to explore the spiritual war from the point of view of the OPFOR.

The Nature of the Enemy
Long before the rise of the Dissident Right on Substack, and long before American Christians realized there was a spiritual war, Traditionalists such as Rene Guenon and Julius Evola had already identified the existence and nature of this war.

According to the Traditionalists, the culture war between tradition and modernity is actually an occult war between the forces of cosmos and the forces of chaos. This occult war has been ongoing since ancient or Biblical times and throughout that time, the forces of chaos have been the cause of every ideology and influence that disintegrates, subverts, and degrades traditional society. Those forces have worked indirectly, to subtly influence human hearts and minds in ways that lead them to degeneration. The forces of chaos had, until the early 20th century, worked primarily to negate tradition, but that project of anti-tradition was effectively completed by the mid-20th century. Thereafter, the forces of chaos began to focus on the creation of a counter-tradition, openly predicated on a debased, infrahuman, and inverted spirituality. The ultimate goal of this counter-tradition, the Traditionalists believed, would be to establish a global totalitarian empire and church that parodies and inverts the true empire and true church of Tradition.

But what establishing a global totalitarian empire isn’t the final objective of the spiritual enemy? What if the objective is actually far more diabolical?

Professor Bruce Charlton, on his blog Charlton Teaching, has written extensively about the nature of evil. According to Charlton, there are three types of evil. Luciferic, Ahrimanic, and Sorathic. As he explains,

    This ordering is reflected in several ways, which are related.

    First it describes the ordering of dominance in history, secondly the degree of evil-ness, and thirdly it reflects the societal hierarchy of The Masses, The Establishment, and The Satanic powers.

    By societal hierarchy I mean that Luciferic evil dominates the Masses - who are evil in impulsive, short-termist ways; Ahrimanic evil is typical of the Global Establishment and its managerial-class servants - who regard Men as merely human resources towards abstract goals; and the Sorathic evil of negation, value-inversion and destruction of The Good is characteristic of the demonic overlords.

Let’s explore each a bit.

Luciferic Evil
Luciferic evil is named for, and symbolized by, Lucifer’s rejection of God’s sovereignty: “I will not serve.” It represents the first stage of evil, in its anti-authoritarian, individualist, and rebellious aspect which seeks to overthrow cosmos (natural order) to maximize freedom of action. Luciferian evil is often attractive, in the lustful blood-and-song manner of ancient pagan heroes, pirates, and rebels.

Charlton argues that Luciferic evil dominated the Sexual Revolution of the 1960s as well as certain aspects of the Libertarian movement. According to Charlton:

    The Luciferic is (roughly) the impulsive, instinctive, self-gratifying, psychopathic kind of evil - as characterised by the frenzied violence and torture of unbridled war; or the greedy lustfulness that drives the sexual revolution… The 'sixties impulse' was Luciferic.

I would add that some members of the Dissident Right probably also have some Luciferian evil in our souls, shouting “I do not consent” to clown world not so much out of support for God but simply out of refusal to pay homage to what we disagree with. (Certainly I am guilty of this.)

Another blogger from the Charltonsphere, William James Tychonievich, explains:

    Those who follow Lucifer are motivated by pleasure rather than the avoidance of pain, and are willing to embrace risk, danger, adventure, even a sort of heroism, in its pursuit. They do not shy away from violence and may even revel in it. Alcibiades, Casanova, Blackbeard -- Falstaff, even.

What Charlton and Tychonievich call Luciferic evil equates to what Guenon and Evola called anti-tradition. By exploiting human selfishness, individualism, and lust, it toppled the Traditional world.

But in the 20th century there came a turning point, when Luciferic evil gave way to Ahrimanic evil, and anti-tradition gave way to counter-tradition.

Ahrimanic Evil
Ahrimanic evil is named for Ahriman, the Zoroastrian adversary of Ahura Mazda. Unlike Lucifer, Ahriman is not a rebel; he is rather a full-fledged counter-sovereign implacably opposed to God, though one lacking in the creative capacity. Charlton explains:

    Ahrimanic evil aims to create a system of value-inversions (virtue becomes vice, while sin is encouraged and rewarded; truth becomes hate-facts and fake-news, while lies are science... etc.). This System will (by such means as law, media propaganda and corporate regulations) subversively 'process' people into a social structure that is anti-God, anti-Christian, anti-Good. 

    The Ahrimanic evil is more modern; it is the despair-inducing, soul-destroying, utterly-demotivating Iron Cage of totalitarian bureaucracy - where all is a single system and all Men are merely cogs to serve it. This is the evil of late Soviet communism, of The Borg, of the overpromoted-middle-manager, Head Girl Type (e.g. the-3-Ms - Merkel, May, Macron) that increasingly runs large organizations, corporations and Western nations.

Tychonievich describes Ahrimanic evil in contrast to Luciferic evil:

    If Lucifer seeks pleasure, Ahriman seeks control. Note that this is not necessarily the same thing as seeking power. Those who serve Ahriman may seek to be in control themselves, but more often their goal may simply be that everything be under control. Hierarchy is of Ahriman, because even those who are far from the top have no objection to it. Even an Ahrimanist who has the ability to control things personally will generally defer these personal decisions to a system or algorithm, personal responsibility being unpleasantly risky. A near-perfect example of Ahrimanic man is the 2020s birdemicist, happy to submit to house arrest, universal surveillance and censorship, and forced medical procedures -- rather than take a chance of catching the flu. "Non serviam" is Lucifer's motto, not Ahriman's; if Ahrimanism were condensed into a two-word motto, it would be, "Safety first" -- or, if more than two words are needed, "None are safe until all are safe.

What Charlton and Tychonievich call Ahrimanic evil equates to what Guenon and Evola called counter-tradition. Having allowed Luciferic evil to “clear the field” of the physiocratic or cosmic order based on beauty, goodness, and truth, Ahrimanic evil proceeds to implement the Black Iron Prison of our contemporary consensus, a system of control over our thoughts and actions.

The Traditionalist analysis of the occult war stops with Ahrimanic evil. Charlton and his cohorts, however, believe Ahrimanic evil is being subsumed by its successor, Sorathic evil.

Sorathic Evil
Sorathic evil is named for Sorath, who Rudolf Steiner described as “the sun-demon of Revelations, whose number is 666.” (For more on Steiner’s description of Sorath, read this essay.)

Charlton explains Sorathic evil as:

    …. the purest, most absolutely negative form of evil.

    If Luciferic evil is motivated by short-termist pleasure; while Ahrimanic evil is motivated by God-denial, spiritual blindness and reductionism towards a meaningless world of mechanical procedures; then the Sorathic impulse is driven by negative impulses - primarily fear, resentment and hatred.

    Sorathic evil will therefore tend to destroy both the lustful pleasures of Luciferic evil, and the complex functional bureaucracies of Ahrimanic evil….

Tychonievich describes Sorath like this:

    By Sorath I mean the principle of evil at its purest, the devil of all devils, Goethe's "spirit that negates." God is the love-motivated Creator, and Sorath is the hate-motivated anti-Creator, who opposes all creation -- who thinks it "better nothing would begin" and that all that has begun "deserves to perish wretchedly."

    Sorath's ultimate goal is that nothing at all exist, including Sorath himself.

There is no equivalent of Sorathic evil in Tradition; Evola and Guenon wrote their most important works during the inflection point when Luciferic evil began to give way to Ahrimanic evil. Neither lived to see the final stage, the stage at which we have arrived.

For, according to Charlton, the world we inhabit is actually already Sorathic:

    A world in which the Luciferic lusts of sex/ drugs and the rock-and-roll lifestyle are forbidden and punished; and also a world in which the global system is being disabled and destroyed - even as its Ahrimanic architects have successfully accomplished a silent global coup, and are trying to perfect it into the grandiose schemes of The Great Reset/ Agenda 2030.

    In 2020 we observe all modern institutions, corporations and every kind of bureaucracy as rapidly declining in efficiency and effectiveness - under pressure from an ever-increasing culture of fear, victimology, entitlement and resentment.

    Sorath divides Mankind into more-and-more, smaller-and-smaller, self-identified victim groups; each resentful-of and pitted-against each other. The aim is eventually for each person to feel alone, consumed by feelings of thwarted entitlement, and hatred of the world; and living in permanent fear of a whole world of other people, each of whom resents and hates the solo-victim just as he hates them.

    And then - eventually - Sorath's intent is that everyone, without exception, should die in fear and despair.

Even those of us who are living it can be misled as to Sorathic evil’s objective really is. Indeed, most of the servants of evil don’t even understand it:

    [The tripartite nature of evil] leads to considerable mutual incomprehension looking upwards.

    The evil Masses simply cannot recognize the evilness of the Establishment-managerial class; they cannot comprehend that the Establishment's vast and comprehensive agendas, plans, schemes are a kind of evil.

    The Masses cannot see this as evil because it is so abstract, so impersonal. Ahrimanic evil has very little 'fun'; it is dull drudgery - meetings, tick-boxes and flow charts.

    And when the Global Establishment look upwards to their demonic overlords; they too fail to see that demonic evil is of a very different nature from the complex Ahrimanic, international, bureaucratic systems that are so laboriously, so tediously, being constructed at present.

Our overlords though the plan was a new world order… but the real orders are to end the world.

OPFOREVIL
Let’s now return to our original premise. Let’s assume that the Charltonists are correct in asserting the tripartite nature of spiritual evil; correct that evil proceeds in stages; and correct that we are now at the Sorathic stage. Let’s put ourselves in the mindset of a Sorathic opposition force - OPFOREVIL.

What is the strategic situation in which we seek to implement our evil plan? While we can’t be certain, the following conjectures seem plausible given our framework:

    OPFOREVIL’s forces are genuinely spiritual — concretely, they are the demons, djinn, and devils of religion; or, abstractly, the “subtle lower forces” of Tradition. In either case, Sorathic evil is not just a metaphor for men who want to see the world burn. Those men are merely its tools.

    OPFOREVIL is not unopposed. The reality of spiritual evil necessitates (or at least strongly suggests) the reality of spiritual good. Angels, heroes, saints, and above all, God, are the OPFOREVIL’s own opposition force (OPFORGOOD).

    OPFOREVIL’s objective is the destruction of the world and the annihilation or damnation of every living creature within it.

    OPFOREVIL has the capacity to bring about the destruction of the world, or at least most of it, through manipulation of material means, e.g. it controls the world’s nuclear arsenals, biological weapons, etc.

    However, our material world is not “all there is.” Even if this world were to be annihilated, the higher realms of God (Heaven, Paradise, etc.) would continue to exist, as would the souls of those who had ascended to those heights. If a great many souls escape annihilation or damnation, that is a defeat for OPFOREVIL and victory for OPFORGOOD.

    Souls ascend to the higher realms (e.g escape annihilation) through religiosity that encourages the correct spiritual action (faith in God, doing good works, submission to Allah, or whatever else one deems to be true). We can remain agnostic about the exact spiritual action required, simply acknowledging that the Luciferic anti-tradition and Ahrimanic counter-tradition work against all of them.

Now consider:

    The global population is higher than it has ever been before. There are more souls available for annihilation or damnation today than ever before in history.

    The global birth rate has collapsed and the global population will soon begin to decline. Therefore, there are more souls available for annihilation or damnation in our era than there will be in the future.

    The level of religiosity in the world’s population is lower than at any time in history. A record number of people have become agnostic or atheistic, and even among the religious, their religiosity is generally thinner and weaker than in prior eras. If true religiosity is what leads to the spiritual action that permits the soul to escape annihilation or damnation, then a huge percentage of the world, probably the highest percentage in history, is vulnerable.

    There is an argument to be made that the decline in religiosity might begin to reverse itself, for two reasons. First, that religious people are more likely to have children, who are in turn more religious than the children of atheists; second, that as spiritual evil becomes more apparent, more and more people seek out spiritual good.

    The global capacity for self-destruction is probably as high as it has ever been. Arguably, it was a bit higher at the height of the Cold War, when the nuclear arsenals were far more vast; but even if the nuclear threat is somewhat diminished, the bioweapon threat is greatly increased, the food chain is more fragile, etc. Meanwhile, the unstable “Thucydides Trap” of our current geopolitics has set the stage for world war.

If the above are true, then the time for OPFOREVIL to strike is… right about now.

The capacity for destruction is about as high as its ever been; the opportunity to launch a total global war is as high as its ever been; the population available for annihilation and damnation in that war is higher than it has ever been; and the population available for annihilation and damnation in the future will soon be lower both in raw numbers and relative percentage of the religious.

From OPFOREVIL’s perspective, there is no time to waste. They need to learn to stop worrying and love the bomb! That is, if this analysis holds, we can and should expect OPFOREVIL to attempt to bring about a total war with the objective of mass death and population genocide. Something like, well, this:

Now, it must be said that I am myself not entirely convinced of the analysis. A convincing case could be made, for instance, that global population might continue to grow, that religiosity might continue to wane, and that therefore OPFOREVIL should wait.

A convincing case could also be made that this is all B.S.: Evola, Guenon, Charlton, and Tychonievich are engaged in conjecture, not scientific assessment of probabilities and I certainly don’t have any evidence that anti-tradition and counter-tradition were actual strategies carried out by evil forces, nor that Luciferic, Ahrimanic, or Sorathic evil are real. Indeed, in my prior tenure as an atheist-materialist, I would have found the entire notion to be pure crackpottery, and there is part of me that still does.

But there is another part of me that looks at our world, deeply in the grip of insanity and evil, falling apart in a crisis of competency, teetering on the brink of total war, and thinks this analysis is entirely correct. If the world isn’t run by Sorathic demons steering us towards destruction, man it sure looks like it could be.

I will continue to contemplate it on the Tree of Woe.

Sorry for the delay. My (Soon-to-be-Ex) Wife gave me my Divorce Papers recently, so I've been swimming in Bureaucratic Evil. Funny how Christians were fussing about giving the Government the 'Right to determine what a marrage is', a couple decades ago & most never realized we had already given authority of marriage to The System.

The system-oriented evil, or if my understanding is correct, the Ahrimanic Evil, has existed for Millenia, though I will admit modern techniques has made it vastly more efficient. None of the 501c3 churches I attended ever spoke about what I am going to say regarding the consequences of this story in the Bible. The ONLY other organized religious group in America I ever heard say this was the Jehovah's Witnesses (Which are not Christian), make of that what you will-

When Jesus endured his 40 days of Temptation, the last test was the Devil taking him up to 'A High Place' and showing him all the Kingdoms of the World (I don't think this was as purely spiritual as many think) and telling him, 'All these will be yours if you will only bow down and worship me.' Obviously, Jesus refused, giving the best possible answer, 'Worship God Alone.'

I have never heard a Pastor draw the obvious conclusion from this- That all governments on Earth are Satanic *By Default*. While there have been exceptions from time to time, notably Ancient Israel for a period, all world rulers are servants of The Devil and his Fallen Angelic Hierarchy.

I have heard some indivduals argue that this stopped after Jesus Christ sacrified Himself to redeem Humanity, but we are told in 1st John that the Devil, 'Grips the World in His Fist', so no, that authority has not changed.

The Ahrimanic Evil, is primarily what the Bible calls, 'Mystery Babylon'. It is that millennia-old system of rulers, continued from Nimrod, the first 'One World Order' King. Though they work in concert with Evil Spiritual Powers, they are every bit the pawns and are just as hated as 'normal' humanity. At one point, the 'Beast' will chuck her off of his back and she will be destroyed.

As I read this, I realized I can feel these things in me: the desire to just be concerned about myself, the desire to control, and the desire to gleefully destroy and tear down that which I think of as evil.

I’d been thinking lately, I haven’t found out how to square the warrior ethos and knowing evil is real, with a sense that “righteous anger” is really easy to take too far and to a destructive place.

This tripartite model makes me think, the battle I need to win is a commitment to be loving and creative, not vengeful and destructive. This makes me wonder if even hoping for the global system, as is, to heal and resolve its problems is wiser than hoping somewhat gleefully for chaos to arise and prove me right. Of course as I write that, it seems sort of obvious. Maybe, “hope for the best, but prepare for the worst” is wise.

Since the millenium, we have entered the era of domination by Sorath - who is consuming Ahriman, as Ahriman consumed Lucifer

My idea here is that the Ahrimanic impulse - which is evil in its cold, rational, systematic manifestation - has over the past couple of centuries consumed the more traditional Luciferic ('devilish') evil of short-termist personal lust, pleasure and torment. And is now being-consumed, in his turn, by 'Sorath'.

The archetypal Ahrimanic evil is epitomised by a manipulative bureaucrat who presides over a state or corporate PSYOPS/prison/death machine; while Luciferic evil would be characterised by proximate evil: for example those who personally beat, rape and torture helpless prisoners. 

The final turning-point of the Ahrimanic consumption of Lucifer was when the Luciferic revival of the 1960s ('sex & drugs & rock-n-roll') was captured by the state bureaucracy - leading to a pervasive and intrusive system of monitoring and control for political correctness.

Modern leaders are primarily Ahrimanic - and often anonymous/ hidden/ personally-timid; while old-style leaders were often Luciferic gangsters and pirates who cultivated a reputation for recklessness and the enjoyment of inflicting cruelty.  Luciferic evil now operates at a low-level in The System - among the mooks, minions and henchmen; while the ruling architects of evil have an Ahrimanic nature.

The Luciferic values were condensed and operationalised into systemic and materialist form; their spontaneity and pleasure were drained-away. 'Free Love' and open-ended promiscuity became compulsory sensitivity-training, and the threat of harrasment prosecutions. Spontaneity ("Turn-on, Tune-in, Drop-out") was incrementaly transformed into a world of proliferating committees, laws, guidelines and procedures; checklists, forms and feedback...

But from about 2000; there was a further move towards the purest, most absolutely negative form of evil - which could be named Sorathic (adapting this from Rudolf Steiner's identification of Sorath as the most extremely evil of beings).

Sorthic evil is neither about pleasure nor about control; it tends towards the purely destructive.

If Luciferic evil is motivated by short-teremist pleasure; while Ahrimanic evil is motivated by God-denial, spiritual blindness and reductionism towards a meaningless world of mechanical procedures; then the Sorathic impulse is driven by negative impulses - primarily fear, resentment and hatred.

Sorathic evil will therefore tend to destroy both the lustful pleasures of Lucuferic evil, and the complex functional bureaucracies of Ahrimanic evil.

This is the Sorathic world we inhabit in 2020.

A world in which the Luciferic lusts of sex/ drugs and the rock-and-roll lifestyle are forbidden and punished; and also a world in which the global system is being disabled and destroyed - even as its Ahrimanic architects have successfully accomplished a silent global coup, and are trying to perfect it into the grandiose schemes of The Great Reset/ Agenda 2030.

In 2020 we observe all modern institutions, corporations and every kind of bureaucracy as rapidly declining in efficiency and effectiveness - under pressure from an ever-increasing culture of fear, victimology, entitlement and resentment.

Sorath divides Mankind into more-and-more, smaller-and-smaller, self-identified victim groups; each resentful-of and pitted-against each other. The aim is eventually for each person to feel alone, consumed by feelings of thwarted entitlement, and hatred of the world; and living in permanent fear of a whole world of other people, each of whom resents and hates the solo-victim just as he hates them.

And then - eventually - Sorath's intent is that everyone, without exception, should die in fear and despair.

Thus we see that Sorath takes Luciferic and Ahrimanic and pits the one against the other, to weaken and destroy both. Whatever gives pleasure is thwarted. Whatever has been created, and is complex or functional, is reduced to chaos.

Chaos is indeed the key term. Ultimately, Sorath is driven by resentment directed against God and all of His works; and resentment of Man as a loving creating-being and all of his works. Sorath wants to reduce creation back to a primal state of chaos.

And then - when all else has been destroyed - to destroy himself as a act of spite against the God who created him.

Such is Sorath's fantasy.

Disclaimer: My terms are borrowed (by way of Terry Boardman and Bruce Charlton) from Rudolf Steiner, but I cannot claim to be using them in anything like a strictly Steinerian sense. In fact I have read only a tiny fraction of Steiner's voluminous output and assimilated only a tiny fraction of that. However, his demonology has long since taken on a life of its own.

These are just some tentative notes. I neither pretend nor aspire to be an expert on evil.

By Sorath I mean the principle of evil at its purest, the devil of all devils, Goethe's "spirit that negates." God is the love-motivated Creator, and Sorath is the hate-motivated anti-Creator, who opposes all creation -- who thinks it "better nothing would begin" and that all that has begun "deserves to perish wretchedly."

Sorath's ultimate goal is that nothing at all exist, including Sorath himself. Does Sorath exist, then? Perhaps not. Perhaps it is not possible that he should. It may be possible to be God, even to be Lucifer, but not to be Sorath. After all, who can fail to see the self-contradictory nature of the statement, "I am the spirit that negates"? Sorath should probably not be thought of as a person at all, but as the hypothetical limit to which evil converges. Appropriately, Sorath is not a name from folklore, not a demon people are actually said to have interacted with, but an artificial creation of Steiner's, made from the Hebrew numerals for 666.

God is, ultimately, a Person -- and, pace Yeats, there is no Deus Inversus, no equal and opposite God of Evil, no Angra Mainyu ("Ahriman" in the original Zoroastrian, non-Steiner sense of that name). Devils who are persons certainly exist, but the devil of all devils is an abstraction, a mathematical limit which none of them can quite reach. And the name we give to this limit, this outer darkness, is also mathematical: Sorath.

We may nevertheless speak, and not altogether figuratively, of "what Sorath wants" and what it means to "serve Sorath."

What Sorath is up against

Sorath is against creation and against Creator -- that is, against existence, against being as such -- so any understanding of Sorath's battle plan must begin with answering that ever-popular question, Why is there something rather than nothing? (And, yes, I intend to answer that little question en passant and then forge ahead with my demonology. This attitude is, incidentally, why there is something rather than nothing posted on this blog.)

Descartes, meet Berkeley. Berkeley, Descartes. Let's have each of you chuck your most famous Latin catchphrase into this here crucible and see what comes out, shall we? And . . . splendid: Esse est cogitari aut cogitare. "To be is to be thought, or to think." Sorath's enemies are thinkers -- God, the gods, and such humbler beings as ourselves -- and the combined harmonious thought of these thinkers, which is the creative Logos.

New thinkers think themselves into existence, oh, probably all the time -- beginning as "minor presences, riffraff of consciousness" (Iris Murdoch's phrase) and then, some of them, developing from there, some even to the threshold of Godhood itself.

But this is likely a one-way street. Thinkers don't ever think themselves out of existence -- how could they? How could you cease, by an act of will, to have an active will? To say, or think, "I will my own annihilation," you have to say I will. Existence cannot be undone.

Thinkers -- excepting perhaps those dragons and titans and hecatoncheires who came into being before there was a Logos -- have a natural tendency to think and act in harmony with the Logos. At first, at the most rudimentary levels of development, this tendency is almost wholly passive and unconscious. "For behold, the dust of the earth moveth hither and thither . . . at the command of our great and everlasting God" (Hel. 12:8) and "even the wind and the sea obey him" (Mark 4:41).

As a thinker develops, though, and becomes increasingly active and conscious, the possibility of deliberately rebelling against the Logos begins to emerge. Sorath wants to persuade as many as possible to choose that path, with the ultimate goal of undoing creation, reducing the cosmos, if not to nothing at all, at least to chaos.

The problem, though, is how to persuade anyone to join you when you have quite literally nothing to offer. The devil of all devils wants everyone "to choose captivity and death, . . . that all men might be miserable like unto himself" (2 Ne. 2:27). Uh, what's the selling point again?

Ultimately, many can and will choose just that -- will say, "Evil, be thou my good!" and walk willingly into hell -- but they must be brought to that point by a circuitous route. That's where Lucifer and Ahriman come in.

Lucifer

In The Song of the Strange Ascetic (which I discuss here), G. K. Chesterton imagines how he would have lived if he "had been a Heathen" and expresses bafflement at the choice of an actual heathen called Higgins -- a sort of Caspar Milquetoast of heathenism -- not to live that life. Heathenism, we are to infer, is as much wasted on the heathens as youth is on the young.

A heathen Chesterton would have filled his life with wine, love affairs, dancing girls, and glorious military campaigns against the Chieftains of the North. He would have served Lucifer, in other words -- pursued forbidden pleasures -- and doesn't quite get this Ahriman fellow whom the prissy bourgeois Higgins chooses to serve instead.

Lucifer is all about wine, women, and song. Those who follow Lucifer are motivated by pleasure rather than the avoidance of pain, and are willing to embrace risk, danger, adventure, even a sort of heroism, in its pursuit. They do not shy away from violence and may even revel in it. Alcibiades, Casanova, Blackbeard -- Falstaff, even. (Not Epicurus, who, despite the modern connotation of his name, was a consummate Higgins.) This is the most relatable and accessible form of evil, the sort a good man like Chesterton could easily fantasize about embracing. "Gateway drug" is the term, I believe.

Why call this aspect of evil Lucifer? Well, because Steiner did, obviously, but we can also invent an ex post facto etymology for it. Lucifer, "light-bearer," is from the Latin lux, "light," but we can imagine that it derives instead from luxus, "luxury, debauchery." Also, Lucifer was originally a name for the planet Venus -- whose other name is that of the ancient Roman goddess of sex, drugs, and rock-'n'-roll.

Ahriman

How did Satan become Satan? Joseph Smith, the Prophet, proposes a somewhat novel origin story for this supervillain: One of the angels comes before the Lord and proposes, "send me, . . . and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost." And it is for this offer of universal salvation -- because, that is, he "sought to destroy the agency of man" -- that he is cast out of heaven and becomes the devil (see Moses 4:1-4).

If Lucifer seeks pleasure, Ahriman seeks control. Note that this is not necessarily the same thing as seeking power. Those who serve Ahriman may seek to be in control themselves, but more often their goal may simply be that everything be under control. Hierarchy is of Ahriman, because even those who are far from the top have no objection to it. Even an Ahrimanist who has the ability to control things personally will generally defer these personal decisions to a system or algorithm, personal responsibility being unpleasantly risky. A near-perfect example of Ahrimanic man is the 2020s birdemicist, happy to submit to house arrest, universal surveillance and censorship, and forced medical procedures -- rather than take a chance of catching the flu. "Non serviam" is Lucifer's motto, not Ahriman's; if Ahrimanism were condensed into a two-word motto, it would be, "Safety first" -- or, if more than two words are needed, "None are safe until all are safe" ("that one soul shall not be lost").

Lucifer's motivation is positive: the pursuit of pleasure. Ahriman's is negative: the elimination of risk. Lucifer's focus is personal; Ahriman's, universal. Thus Ahriman, though less obviously "evil" than Lucifer, is actually considerably closer than Lucifer to Sorath, to the pure and universal "spirit that negates."

Conceptually, Sorath is primary, and I have discussed him first. Chronologically, in the evolutionary development of evil, he comes last. The natural progression is from Good to Luciferic, from Luciferic to Ahrimanic, and from Ahrimanic to Sorathic.

First, the good are tempted by forbidden pleasures, and by forbidden means of pursuing good ends, and embrace the ethos of Abbey of Thélème: Fay ce que vouldras, "Do what you want."

This Luciferic playing-with-fire leads to predictable results, people begin to feel that the world has become a chaotic and dangerous place, and they turn to Ahriman. We can see a clear example of this if we look back at the past half-century: As the flower children (those fleurs de mal) blossomed into flower fogeys, a movement that began with free speech, free love, and letting it all hang out evolved organically into the world of PC, sexual harassment prevention training, and a superstitious horror of the "inappropriate."

As Ahriman drains the world of its charm and turns everything into management and bureaucracy, as he extinguishes joy and the memory of joy, as everyone, to one degree or another, is assimilated into his soulless system, mutual respect becomes impossible, more and more people live in a state of barely suppressed rage, and the prospect of burning everything to the ground becomes increasingly attractive. Sorath has arrived.

The Blood War

    And fiends of Hell rejoice upon the slain,
    O who can stand?

In the Dungeons and Dragons cosmology, one of the defining features of the "Lower Planes" (hell) is the Blood War -- the interminable conflict between the chaotic-evil (Luciferic) demons and the lawful-evil (Ahrimanic) devils, with a third class of neutral-evil (Sorathic?) fiends manipulatively playing each side against the other. So -- did the D&D guys get hell more or less right? Was old Gary Gygax privy to one or two of the deep things of Satan?

If the Blood War did not exist, Sorath would have to invent it. Remember what Sorath wants -- for men to hate the good as such and to pursue evil strictly for the evulz -- and how contrary to human nature that is. How to get us humans to sail against the wind of our own deepest nature? By tacking, of course.

    Sorath's goal: Avoid good, pursue evil
    Human nature: Pursue good, avoid evil
    Lucifer tack: Sacrifice the avoidance of evil in order to pursue good (e.g. to seek pleasure)
    Ahriman tack: Sacrifice the pursuit of good in order to avoid evil (e.g. to be "safe")

Clever little devil, right? But so far this is just tacking, and no one ever said tacking was hell. War is hell. That's the next step. Notice that the Lucifer tack and the Ahriman tack are polar opposites and are both evil. With just a bit of nudging, we get this:

    Sorathized Lucifer: Sacrifice the avoidance of evil in order to destroy Ahriman!
    Sorathized Ahriman: Sacrifice the pursuit of good in order to crush Lucifer!

Rage against the machine! Machinate against the rage! Behead those who insult Sorath -- who, for his part, claps his broad wings above the battle and sails rejoicing in the flood of Death. O who can stand?

La fin de Satan?

    And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, "How can Satan cast out Satan? And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand. And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.

Given what we have discussed thus far, what are we to make of this statement attributed to Jesus?

Victor Hugo's unfinished poem does not really address the matter; I have pilfered the title because of its ambiguity. La fin de Satan could mean the annihilation of Satan, or it could mean Satan's objective, his telos (which is in fact the word used in Mark) -- and, wait, are those even two different things? Didn't we say that "Sorath's ultimate goal is that nothing at all exist, including Sorath himself"? La fin de Satan est la fin de Satan.

Jesus, in the passage quoted, is responding to the claim that "by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils." The implication is that devils obviously don't work that way, because if they did, the whole enterprise of devilry would have collapsed long ago, torn apart by infighting. The continued existence of Satan is proof that Satan is not in the habit of undermining himself, and thus that the whole idea of a power-of-Satan-compels-you exorcist is inherently implausible.

Everything I've written in this post thus far -- Lucifer vs. Ahriman, the Blood War, all that -- seems to be saying that the kingdom of Satan succeeds by being divided against itself, and thus that Jesus was wrong. Well, as a Christian, I obviously can't leave it at that!

The easy way out would be to point out that this quote from Jesus does not appear in the Fourth and most authoritative Gospel, that Mark consists of notes compiled by a non-witness, and that Jesus may well never have said anything like this. Honestly, though, it sounds quite Jesusy to me, and I believe he probably did say it or something like it.

Another possibility is that Jesus was speaking specifically about exorcism. Back when I still believed the mainstream idea that Mark's was the most trustworthy Gospel and was focusing my studies on it, I went so far as to read an entire book called Demonic Possession in the New Testament, by William Menzies Alexander. Alexander draws a distinction between possession by "demons" or "unclean spirits" (a condition cured by Jesus on many occasions) and possession by "Satan" (attributed only to Judas Iscariot). The latter (which also has the distinction of being the only "possession" mentioned in the Fourth Gospel) is clearly moral in nature and leads to damnation. In contrast, those troubled by "unclean spirits" are treated as victims who bear no moral responsibility for their condition. The other important point that Alexander makes is that the wave of demon-possession described in Mark was a unique phenomenon, localized in time and space. With a few ambiguous exceptions like the case of King Saul, there is scarcely a hint of demon-possession in the Old Testament, nor does demon-possession in the Marcan mold appear to happen much in the modern world. (Satan-possession, in contrast, seems to be at an all-time high.) The demoniacs of first-century Palestine, a bit like the Convulsionnaires of Saint-Médard centuries later, appear to have represented a sort of spiritual outbreak or epidemic which flared up, spread through the population, and then burnt itself out -- with this last process perhaps expedited by the activity of Jesus and his disciples. If this phenomenon was the "Satan" Jesus' accusers were referring to, it would appear that its kingdom didn't stand, and it did have an end.

Something else to keep in mind is that Jesus' responses to critics or those who tried to catch him in his words generally worked on two levels. At the level of mere repartee, their purpose was to pwn and silence his opponents; at a deeper level, they were "parables" -- riddles -- conveying more substantive truth. For example, Jesus' famous statement about the unforgivable sin against the Holy Ghost was also a response to accusations that he used demonic power to cast out demons. As rhetoric, its message was, "Be very careful calling something demonic which may actually be from the Holy Ghost" -- but we can hardly conclude that mistakenly thinking a particular "miracle" may be demonic is the unforgivable sin! The deeper meaning of this statement is, well, deep, and a great deal has been thought and written about it -- almost all of which, rightly, departs from the statement's original rhetorical context.

So focusing too much on the conclusion "and therefore exorcisms are never performed by demonic power" may be much too narrow a constraint when it comes to understanding the deeper meaning of "How can Satan cast out Satan?" Rhetorically, it is supposed to work as a reductio ad absurbum: Satan obviously wouldn't undermine his own power; therefore, no exorcist is a servant of Satan. But those who think it out realize at that what it reduces to isn't absurd at all: Satan cannot stand, but hath an end. I mean, what's the alternative, really? That Satan and his works will endure forever? That Satan -- ce monstre délicat -- has eternal life?

What if they gave a Blood War and nobody came?

We are not here to fight in the Blood War. We are not here to contend against Satan and those who serve him. The example of the Messiah conspicuously not overthrowing the Empire should have made that clear enough. We are here to learn, to serve God, and to follow Jesus to eternal life. Anything else is a distraction.

The other day on Bruce's blog, I very briefly described my difficulty in thinking or saying anything about Sorathic evil, which I summed up as staring into a void or black hole (as William notes above). Your observation of Satan being divided against himself makes sense in this regard. Since Satan is against God and Creation and all being, his ultimate goal is the destruction of God and Creation - the annihilation of all being. At Satan's core lies the void of non-being - the core toward which the Lucifer and Ahriman gravitate. Another way to think about it (perhaps), God and Creation integrate; Satan works to disintegrate Creation via Lucifer and Ahriman; however, at the center of it all sits Sorath - the final force of disintegration that works to smash all the broken up components into total nothingness. I know you're not a Trinitarian, but it just occurred to me that one way of conceptualizing Lucifer, Ahriman, and Sorath could be to consider them as the unholy Trinity of Satan.

    Fair point, I assume demons compete and fight each other (like orcs; or as depicted in The Screwtape Letters); but they do synergise, in the sense that one kind of evil tends to fuel another, to make something worse than either could accomplish alone.

    The above example of Luciferic counter-culture feeding the Ahrimanic bureaucracy is one - another example is that the Luciferic media hysteria about the birdemic is feeding the Ahrimanic state apparatus of oppression. In the other direction is that the soul-crushing life so many people live in Ahrimanic bureaucracies often fuels Luciferic sins such as sexual infidelity and drugs, as people try to escape the meaningless materialism of their work - or, people use their System work (in organisations evil in motivation and effect) to pay for their 'real lives' of lust and intoxication.

Christ Module 14 – the counterforces: Lucifer, Ahriman and Sorat
The spiritual 'counterforces' is another, maybe more 'technical' term for 'evil', referring to the fact that these forces counter or oppose the natural good development. They provide strong resistance with which development is confronted, and needs to struggle and cope with - in order to progress correctly, thereby strengthening the development. A simple analogy is that of the resistance of the road that enables the car to move forward due to the traction it provides and needs to be overcome.

Luciferic, Ahrimanic and Asuric beings are the spiritual scientific terms for three different categories of those counterforces. With Luciferic, Ahrimanic and Sorat the 'leaders' of these streams are referenced.

In initiation one can qualify these as 'elemental unbalances', as certain elements and etheric formative forces become overly dominant versus the normally expected healthy balance.

Throughout the ages the fight between opposing spiritual entities has been referred to as War in heaven, the fallen angels, the image of Michael and the dragon, etc. Also Christ-Jesus confronts Lucifer and Ahriman: Lucifer already on Old Sun, and Ahriman in the Bible references to the temptation in the desert.

Man is battlefield between the natural balanced spiritual hierarchies and the influences of the abnormal or 'opposing' spiritual hierarchies.

Atheists use 'the problem of evil' as a reason why there can not be a good which is infinitely good called God. The answer to this question is that evil exists in our world as well as in the astral and spirit worlds, but not in higher worlds above.

It was allowed by Divine Providence to be part of the creative development of Man (or mankind as the tenth hierarchy) within our solar system development. Everything we experience and encounter up to the spirit world is a creation from our solar system development since Old Saturn. Spiritual science positions the Luciferic and Ahrimanic influences in this development that unfolds in the higher spirit world and below. On the budhi and nirvana plane no such thing as evil exists.

Evil was allowed into evolutionary current by Divine Providence to strengthen the development of Man, and also came as a consequence or 'price to pay' and the unique development of freedom in Man, a first in the development of spiritual hierarchies.

The task of evil is to promote the ascent of Man. The radical transmutating of the most fierce evil by the pure good will bring a special love and condition of moral holiness on Earth. See also Manicheism in the Sixth epoch.

The Nature of Sorat the Sun Demon

Every level of the celestial hierarchy has beings who have resolved to remain behind normal evolution, motivated by their own selfish desires. This process of devolution is often called evil and is mistakenly assumed to work against spiritual evolution when, in fact, without this “evil” good would have nothing to “come up against” to stimulate appropriate development. These “fallen” hierarchical beings are generally called the Luciferic hosts, as described in the Christian Bible as the casting out of Lucifer from heaven. These “falls” from grace happen continuously and also can happen to humans as they “fall” from being truly human into animality or transhumanism. Some humans are also tempted by elemental beings to degenerate into animal, plant, and even mineral states of consciousness.

There is tremendous confusion about what Dr. Rudolf Steiner has said about the different types of evil that effect human development. Unfortunately, there are numerous “teachers” who spout Steiner’s indications without adequate research and study and lead people astray. Steiner’s descriptions of Lucifer, Ahriman, Asuras, and the Sun Demon Sorat (also: Sorath) have been rolled up into a ball of confusion by many who have not devoted the requisite 10-20 years of studying Steiner’s opus (over 20 books and 6,000 lectures). Often, a milquetoast version or a cartoon caricature arises that is then taught to people who are just beginning to read and study Anthroposophy, and thus many mistakes are made and nonsense is propagated as Steiner “truths.” This confusion, conflation, confabulation and nonsense has led many people to misunderstand Steiner’s wisdom. In fact, leaders in the Anthroposophical Society and authors writing books for Anthroposophic publishers are not being questioned about their personal interpretations of Steiner’s view of evil. Due to the tremendous amount of evil in the world today, this misguidance is quite dangerous to the unwitting new student of spiritual science.

We have produced intelligence reports on the nature of evil to try to rectify this impending situation, but as evil grows so does the disinformation concerning its true nature. Many pseudo-spiritual scientists are preaching their version of the nature of Lucifer and Ahriman and ignore the evil work of the Asuras and Sorat. The question of whether the being of materialism, Ahriman, has now incarnated in a human body as Steiner indicated is misunderstood. These indications are hotly debated by people who obviously have not read all that Steiner said about Ahriman. Even the human incarnation of Lucifer in China is debated and so confusing that the benefits of Steiner’s wisdom is wasted on misinterpretations of partially informed people. The misdirection of “new versions” of Lucifer and Ahriman are distracting from the more deadly and permanent effects of the Asuras who “take bites out the human being’s ego” that can never be restored. This attack is an invitation to the Sun Demon Sorat to leave the Sun and come to Earth to claim his kingdom prepared by the Asuras.

Evil hides itself purposely to try and convince humans that Evil and Spiritual Good do not exist at all. It is only logical that if Evil exists, so does Good. Unfortunately, many evil humans are happy to host the demonic intentions of the counter-evolutionary forces of the Asuras who work directly for Sorat, not Ahriman. Materialism is the new religion of science and scientists are often possessed by Ahriman and controlled by the Asuras. Scientists and doctors are actively working with evil elemental beings to create inventions that eat the soul and spirit of humans. All types of graphene oxide and polyethylene glycol have been developed by the very Federal agencies that are supposed to be focused on healing but are, in fact, consciously creating evil drugs and medical procedures that create illness and death. This scientific genocide is exactly what Steiner and other spiritual scientists have predicted will create the “war of all against all” and what we generally understand as the apocalypse, the end of evolution. These scenarios are not supposed to happen until the Moon reunites with the Earth in approximately 6,000 years.

Rudolf Steiner warned his followers numerous times that if the forces of materialism, which began in 1840, were to prevail against the forces of the spirit, the apocalypse could appear 6,000 years to early and wipe out the spiritual plan for human evolution. Many have not taken this indication seriously and therefore underestimate what we have recently seen as the global plan to hand human development over to selfish, evil beings (working through humans) whose greatest desire is to end humanity all together. Being naïve to these indications has led many to speculate that humanity is doing fine and in no danger. This is the biggest mistake that humanity collectively can make. Underestimating the power of the Asuras and Sorat leads to human extinction.

How do we counteract this overt attack? We must track the work of demon-possessed scientists and doctors and hold them accountable for premeditated mass-murder and the willful intent to exterminate most of humanity. These possessed individuals from the NIH, CDCP, Big-Pharma, and the WHO know clearly what they are doing but imagine that since they don’t take the deadly medicines, they will be the ones to inherit the world after depopulation. They have fallen prey to believing the “father of lies” that only the elite (who know the secret agenda) will be left to rule the world. These murderers will be wiped out also, just like those they targeted. Evil has no friends. Lucifer and Ahriman hate each other and cannot see the Christ, the Sun Hero who fights directly against Sorat.

Look around and you will see evil, death-dealing “inventions” and “medicines” being discovered every day and no one is monitoring the moral or immoral intent of these inventions. There are literally, thousands of evil medical treatments and scientific inventions that are made to kill humans and yet they are allowed, even though they are not “approved.” Every vaccination in America, according to the drug companies own information, is filled with poisons like graphene oxide and polyethylene glycol and many other carcinogens. Messenger RNA is only known to kill and yet the fascist World Health Organization and its global partners tried to vaccinate the entire Earth’s population with the intent of killing every inoculated “lab rat.”

Lucifer, in our time, can be found active in the astral body of humans. Taming that “Dragon” is the same mission of an initiate who is trying to tame his astral body. The astral body is the entire accumulation of the wisdom of the animal world rolled into the “paragon” of the animal kingdom – the human being. Lucifer would be happy if all humans devolved into animals through extinguishing higher developed human thinking. Lucifer infects human thinking until no life is left and human thinking becomes grey, shadow thinking that replaces healthy human thinking. Artificial intelligence is Lucifer’s thinking working with Ahrimanic machinces.

War and hatred are inspired by Lucifer to help destroy spiritual evolution through evil thinking. Ahriman, on the other hand, is found in the etheric body of the human being as entropy, gravity, illness, old age, and death. The etheric body is levity and the source of life for the human being and the Earth. Ahriman’s materialistic science leads to a cold, dark grave with no hope of an afterlife and finds its home in human feelings – cold, dead, selfish feelings. The Asuras are found outside of the human body trying to get in and destroy the eternal nature of the human ego. Thus, modern materialistic science has created substances that literally eat the eternal nature of the human being in an attempt to annihilate all humans. The Asuras were not supposed to have such power in our time, but science and medicine is ruled by Ahriman who possesses evil humans to be the conduit for new inventions that kill the human spirit. We have revealed these mechanisms in many previous intelligence reports, but few are willing to listen.
Can we stop these evil beings from bringing on the apocalypse 6,000 years early? We believe that consciousness is the most powerful tool in this battle. Bringing the true nature of evil to the attention of a few initiates is all that is necessary.
Forty-eight initiates (4 x12) becoming aware of this evil is the antidote to an accelerated time-line of human evolution that leads to destruction of the human “I Am.”

Sadly enough, two-thirds of humanity will not listen to Steiner’s indications and may be lost to this diabolic plan of evil entities. Shinning light on this nefarious plan is tantamount to defusing it. Evil cannot harm those who have Christ on the throne of their hearts. Ahriman and Lucifer cannot see Christ at all and don’t know yet that they have already been defeated if humans accept the grace, mercy, and divine plan for humanity.
