Obsidian
#1
I thoroughlly enjoyed the discussion in this category about crystals.  I too, have enjoyed studying them, working with them, making jewelry, etc., for many years.  In working with black stones for Jewelry, I prefer black tourmaline or smoky quartz.

The previous discussion on crystals led me to think about working with Obsidian again.  I have a large obsidian egg (about the size of a large chicken egg) that I keep tucked away in a handmade velvet bag that I store with other crystals that I don't work with often.  I have used it only rarely and it has been many years.

I have found that when there is potentially dangerous intrigue around you, it works wonderfully if you program it to protect and ground you while bringing hidden agendas to light.  I have also used it in shamanic work, for grounding, protection, and to bring subconscious issues to the surface.   Now, I am thinking of creating a healing ceremony to bring some of my subconscious issues to the surface, and for protection and grounding. I try to treat all my crystal friends with the utmost respect, but I have always been especially careful to do so with Obsidian.  I have never experienced use of Obsidian to precipitate explosive or harsh events, but I always thought of that as a possibility if one was not respectful of it, or if one is not responsible.  By responsible, I mean that we must recognize the possiblility that some unpleasant experiences are mirroring something inside ourselves.

I always thought of Obsidian as Plutonian.  I think it is described as Plutionian by Katrina Raphael who put out one of the first crystal books I bought in the late 80s.  Obsidian is, after all, volcanic glass.  What is more Plutonian than that?

I was surprised, therefore to see that Melody (Love Is In The Earth) says Obsidian is ruled by Sagitarius.   I don't understand that at all.  Is there anyone here who can enlighten me?  I would also appreciate any suggestions about healing work with Obsidian.

Hi Spiritvoyager,
I love melody’s work and consider her to be the guru of crystals, but not the guru of astrology. I agree that all dark and black stones are plutonian because they are useful with surfacing memories that have been stored due to trauma and Pluto is of equal intention.
Obsidian should not be stored with any other crystals, it is too dominant and will suck the energy from others, but happy next to a good quality quartz. Most crystals like to be stored with their own type of energy, I store mine in color coordination.
Obsidian is excellent for deprogramming and activating issues, but you should always be prepared for the outcome.
I have always found using a double quartz terminator to be very beneficial when applying techniques that involve obsidian.
Obsidian works great within the brow chakra and the solar plexus, these two areas are for absorbing and storing. Obsidian is beneficial to deep tissue Dis-ease, bone ailments – arthritis etc, its only purpose really is for anything deep, whether it is a physical, spiritual or mental issue that one might have.

Thank you Astrojewels,

for your perspective and suggestions.  I thought storing the Obsidian in its own gold lame lined velvet pouch was sufficient, but maybe I should dedicate a wooden box to the black stones, and reorganize the others.  I have quite a collection of wooden boxes (mostly old silverware and cigar boxes) that I refinish and line with cushioned velvet to hold crystals that are not displayed out in the open. I was also wondering, if you have tried the technique of clearing and recharging  crystals by laying them on a slab of silica, near a window where they can get sunlight.

I have experienced so much Pluto energy in the last decade through transits that I have learned to appreciate its value in clearing out that which is no longer constructive. Experiencing Pluto energy can teach one to handle difficult circumstances with more detachment and less emotional turmoil.  Recovering and rebuilding after the devastation is, however another issue.  I wish I had thought sooner of working with Obsidian and Quartz to assist with these circumstances.  Of course, Pluto is very strong in my natal chart.  I would imagine that its energy might  be too harsh for those where that is not the case.

Thanks Diajin for your suggestions.

I wish I understood your language.  After reading your post on another thread (can't remember where now) I was wondering.

Are you familiar with those caves in the inner earth that are lit by crystals of many colors?  I travelled out of body there once and was taken there after travelling a series of rivers by my native ancestors, who told me many things about the history of the earth and certain cultures.  I was working with Obsidian (and some other stones) at the time.  I know this place was real because years later, a friend showed me a book in which the author described this same place.

Spiritvoyager,
I have not tried that technique, but it sounds interesting, I have many big pieces they recharge the smaller ones, and the bigger ones I put out on the rising of the full moon or in sunlight on particular days that are astrologically energetic. They actually talk to me and transmit these thoughts that they are down and need a recharge it is quite bizarre.
Pluto is one of the most difficult to overcome in the chart, and because it also belongs to your generation, I like to think it holds the purpose of your generation but how you absorb it independently. Metaphorically, it provides information to how strong your link is within the chain.
