OAKLAND PARK, Fla. - A small plane crashed Friday into a house outside Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the Federal Aviation Administration said.
Television images showed the house with a gaping hole, smoke still covering the home. Firefighters were working to extinguish the flames.
A passerby saw the Cessna 421, which is a twin-engine prop plane, go down and alerted authorities, police said. No further details were available.
The plane crashed shortly after its 11:15 a.m. departure from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, which is near the home, FAA officials told NBC News. It was headed for Fernandina Beach, Fla., NBC News reported.
It wasn't clear if anyone was inside the home, or how many people were aboard the plane.
Cessna 421 aircraft have a capacity of up to eight passengers.
