Quake Kills Over 5000 In Indonesia

YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia - A powerful earthquake flattened homes and hotels in central Indonesia early Saturday as people slept, killing at least 2,900 and injuring thousands more in the nation's worst disaster since the 2004 tsunami.

Saw this on the news tonight - death and injury numbers are estimates at the moment as medical services are failing and utilites are out.  An earthquake expert in the segment said that as the earthquake was not centred at Merapi, it would not have been caused by the eruption - the explanation was the usual "tectonic plates crunching together"  Merapi is still acting up.  I think Stewart had forecasts of these events recently.  We are all watching this unfold as this whole area is unstable in more ways than one.

I see the death count has risen to over 5,000 and 200,000 homeless. I wonder if that volcano will go off next. It looks like Stewart’s predictions are starting to unfold. :eek:

PP, I’m sorry to hear about your friend. I know what you mean about wondering if you can deal with all the disasters that are about to come. I see now they think the Mount Merapi volcano is going to blow. 2006 sounds like it's going to be a bad year. :(

Since all this activity is taking place in the “Ring of fire”, it makes me wonder what will be next. It might be LA like Stewart says.

I remember the Boxing Day Asian Tsunami that ended up killing over 2 million South East Asians.On Talksport Radio News this morning the presenter stated that 45,000 Indonesians had been killed and 280,000 had been injured. In the next hourly report this figure was 5000. So it seems either they were telling the truth and readjusted or he messed up and gave out 45,000 instead of 4500 perhaps.I really hope the California Earthquake does not happen at all, as my father and step-mother seem hellbent on staying put in Laurel Canyon in the Hollywood Hills.I remember Stewart Swerdlow telling me how he had offices there and moved to Phoenix in Arizona to get away from the coming earthquakes.I hope my father and step-mother will be alright. I also feel sorry for Weng and his parents. I hope they will all work on their Victim Mentalities so the earthquakes do not harm them if they occur.

Hmm, I also think I'd like to move out of NZ sooner rather than later.  The Pacific plate goes right through the country, and we're apprently in for some earthquakes, tidal waves, and volcanoes... which is a lot for a fairly small country, and there are not many places to swim to!! :D 

Well, I know I am safe, and I keep all who are dear to me in protection.  I have no doubt that each person's experience will fall into place as it needs to, to keep them from harm.  You're all on my list btw... :)

You’re right about NZ, it doesn’t sound too good right now. I heard you already had a quake out that way last week.

Last week there was a sequence of earthquakes between New Zealand and Tonga that were far greater - we got up to magnitude of 7.8 on one day," he said. "But nobody knows anything about it because it didn't affect anybody.
