SWARM OF QUAKES HIT HAWAII

Swarm of Quakes Hit Hawaii; Crater Collapse Possible

by Mitch Battros - Earth Changes Media

About 70 shallow earthquakes in 2 hours occurred beneath the upper east rift zone of Kîlauea early this morning. The swarm began at 2:15 a.m. on Sunday, June 17 and is ongoing. Some quakes are in the mid 3's magnituds. The earthquakes are centered 1 km (1 mile) southwest of Mauna Ulu and are concentrated between 1.5 and 3 kilometers (1-2 miles) deep. As of 4:30 a.m., ten of the quakes had magnitudes greater than 3 and were felt by nearby residents.

All data so far is consistent with the event being a shallow intrusion of magma. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is watching the situation closely and has deployed field crews to the scene.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has taken the following precautionary measures: Chain of Craters road is closed. Crater Rim Drive is closed between Jaggar museum and the Thurston lava tube parking lot. NPS personnel are sweeping both roads to evacuate visitors.

I have been following this story closely since the Big Island of Hawaii is one of my favorite places on earth.  I have visited other places but I always seem to return to the Big Island again and again.

Lava oozes from new location on Hawaii's Kilauea following small earthquakes

HONOLULU (AP) _ Three large cracks have been formed in a forested area of Kilauea threatening to cause a flare-up that could endanger rare plants and species.

The third fissure was discovered yesterday in the upper east rift zone, a few miles southeast of Kilauea's summit, near where two were spotted earlier this week spewing steam and oozing lava.

The area is an ecological area home to honeycreeper birds, happy face spiders and damselflies. There are also native trees and ferns found no where else in the state.

Officials were considering setting up water pools in the area to help extinguish possible fires.

Scientists have also detected hazardous sulfur dioxide concentrations near Kilauea's summit.

Researchers on the Big Island had been looking for a new lava breakout point after hundreds of small earthquakes have been recorded Sunday, suggesting magma, or underground lava, was shifting beneath the surface.

I'll tell you what -- after I retire and I move to Hawaii, as that is The Current Big Plan, and I get the house set up... I shall invite you for a stay.  It is an amazing, beautiful place amidst lava spews and earthquakes. But you will be welcome to try it out for a mini-vacation.   icon_yes

Check out this massive waterfall in Waipi`o Valley on the Big Island.  Here.

The valley is.. or was... reserved for royalty -- Hawaiian Kings/Queens.... but I think you'd qualify with no problem at all.  ;)

It's also known as the Valley of The Kings.  I've managed to visit there many times.  There's a steep incline of a road going into the valley but once there, it's wild.  You want waterfalls...  man o' man, there are some GREAT waterfalls there.

There's also a great black sand beach at the front of the valley.

Yikes
! All this talk makes me want to be there now.  Now that's the Super Power I wish I had.... the ability to go to any place in the world in an instant!  icon_zauberer

Woo,  fond, fond memories of that place.  :dude:
