Self-help 'makes you feel worse'
#11
SI, AA can help due to someone finding understanding as to what they are dealing with . In the end though their "mantra" is  "I am powerless over alcohol "or something very similar. They use "I am powerless" alot!!  It has been my observation that this is not helpful in the long run. People aren't powerless .

Yes MN,

These groups do empower the substance, and using such affirmations as ‘powerless’ to a person battling addiction can be very destructive, because the substance does have control over the person.

Words are not enough to change the direction of your life, however affirmations are extremely beneficial once you have a goal, this is the biggest problem with most people- they have no goal/direction so they send out confused messages.

Ah I didn't know AA uses "powerless". I would assume therapy groups are smart enough to encourage each other with beneficial words.

There is always a bad-good to everything SI, that is part of the problem in his world, the good thing about groups such as AA is that people that have denied they have an addiction are able to finally face the truth, with others that have the same addiction. It is ok while they are in the therapy, because they can honestly share their fears, yet it is a form of hypnotism, and these groups never reach the core of ‘why’ they began that journey and that is the reason why rehab has such a low percentage of success.

I strongly disagree that groups cannot reach the core of "why". Simply discussing their experiences like what we are doing on a message board can reach the core of "why".

"That is the reason why rehab has such a low percentage of success."
Do you have stats? I'm not talking about those celebrities rehab shows that are biased for drama.
