Summer Snow falls on Australian towns
#11
I would love to see a wood pecker, are they loud? sometimes I just listen to all the different birds and think how do people live in the city and have cars, trucks etc as their nature…here  is a link to a great site on Australian birds, take a look when you get a chance.

If a woodpecker is pecking away on your house(not good) it can be loud:?. yes sometimes it can be loud  depending on the tree , it's location and the what kind of woodpecker. We have 3 or 4 different kinds.. . the plieated is the biggest and can make some noise .

Thanks for the link.I'm a geeky bird watcher:)

I know we are way off topic but.... on the river in warmer weather we have great blue herons.  They fly over to the wetland perserve just a mile west of us  quite often so I placed a heron weathervane on the corncrib in their honor. Osprey and  hawks are common and there is an occasional kestral and golden eagle. Last spring I was excited to witness a bald eagle fish from the river. They were endangered but have made a strong comeback.

Okay, I am going to jump in here...first of all, our weather, while it has warmed up some, still has not gotten above 40. We are SUPPOSED to have a warm up, but it is yet to be seen. A lot of snow has melted, but we still have at least 6 or 7 inches on the ground. It is grey and cloudy almost every day. We did have a couple of days when we actually could see the sky. Boy was I happy! Although it was a very, very, pale blue color. Almost white. Not the bright blue it should be. The news said that we are supposed to be having a major return to winter in the beginning of February.

As to birds, we have a couple of woodpecker families that come here every year. A large red-headed woodpecker and the smaller downy woodpecker. Yes, they can be noisy when they are rat a tat tatting on the trees near your house. But I love them. We have quite a variety of birds here, because we keep 4 feeders filled plus one for the woodpeckers. My favorites are what I call "yellow bird." They are really the American Goldfinch. Some people call them wild canaries. I also love the Blue Grosbeak and the Indigo Bunting. They are such a gorgeous blue color. My least favorite are the crows. They always make me think of death and bad things to come. The Blue Jays are very noisy and messy birds, and are also mean to the other little birds, so I don't mind when they leave. We also have some gorgeous hawks that are around here, but they are not very welcome by any of the other birds. Haha

We have sooo many birds here it 's lengthy to name them all . We have the goldfinch and indigo bunting, which are just gorgeous as you say DT. Do you see them in the winter? My least favorite are the ever present starlings! If you ever get a chance  DT you'll see how the smaller birds gang up on the hawks and chase them away.

I like barnswallows because they herald spring and they are sociable.

DT,

Glad to hear you are getting patchy blue sky, that’s better than nothing and hey its winter, its supposed to be cold! It will not matter how far we reach with technology they will never get the weather reports accurate.. love hearing about the birds, when and if I ever get back I want to see those woodpeckers at your house and MN’s, and I want to see that mountain lion too, but there is no chance of me ever coming in winter…nooooooo way.

I hope you get to see the mountain lion. Not many people actually see one in the wild which is why they are known as the "ghost cat".If they do it's usually a fleeting glimpse as they are running off. Even the U.S Fish and Wildlife gal that was here  over the holidays has never seen one in the wild and she is stationed in well known mountain lion populated  Montana and Wyoming. The one I saw just strolled by. A neighbor swears he saw a black one along the road over the holidays.

On another note AJ.. I met a local man who used to live on my property. He has a huge collection of fossils and relics he found over time. In that collection are pure quartz crystal arrowheads. I'd never seen any pure quartz crystal arrowheads before.

Maybe they send off bad energy, I think I would see it if I came over because animals know instinctively if you are a threat, yesterday my daughter and I went for a bike ride, and on our way, we seen an echidna and two baby joeys (kangaroos) boxing in the field, they are just so cute…I want to just go and give em a cuddle but I dont think the big boss would like that ....ha
