Thousands Of Oz Birds Fall Dead

A DEAD wattle bird could hold the key to the mystery deaths of thousands of birds in Esperance.

The bird arrived in Perth yesterday after being flown 725km on a commercial flight from the southern port in a last-ditch effort to discover why thousands of the town's birds have died mysteriously over the past three weeks.

Residents are increasingly concerned, although West Australian health authorities have denied there is any likelihood of a risk to human health.

A post-mortem on the delicate 35g native bird took just over an hour yesterday at the state's animal health laboratory, but a spokesperson said the results would not be known for at least a week.

Tissue samples will be sent to the National Animal Health Laboratory in Victoria in the search for answers.

The catastrophic deaths of up to 5000 wattle birds, honeyeaters and miners in three weeks, have experts baffled. The birds have been found vomiting and convulsing in bushland and suburban backyards over an extensive area.

The Department of Environment and Conservation has failed to uncover any likely cause despite questioning industry groups, agronomists, grain handlers and timber companies about pesticide and chemical use.

They have not ruled out a natural cause, although most believe chemicals or pesticides are more likely.

While five previous autopsies have failed to find answers, the wattle bird represents the state Government's best chance to date because it was handed in while still alive, enabling its organs to be preserved before it was sent to Perth for autopsy.

Members of the public are being asked to hand in any dead or dying birds for further tests, but with few birds left in the town they hold little hope of getting more specimens.

Department of Environment and Conservation  Esperance nature conservation coordinator Mike Fitzgerald says toxic wetlands near Esperance are the most likely reason for the mass bird deaths.

Acting state chief veterinary officer Fiona Sunderman said having the latest bird - found in a park by local resident Michelle Crisp - handed in alive should help in the bid to unlock the mystery.

The attitude of WA officials is in stark contrast to their counterparts in Texas, who declared a major emergency this week when 63 dead birds were found in a street in the city of Austin.

Austin police shut 10 city blocks as workers in hazardous-materials suits tested for contaminants that may have killed grackles, sparrows and pigeons.

Experts believe the most likely cause of the Texas die-off is a deliberate poisoning as the crow-like grackles are regarded as a pest, covering the sidewalk in droppings.

As Texas officials insisted there was no threat to humans, West Australian Health Department director of environmental health Jim Dodds said there was nothing to indicate any risk to human health in Esperance.

"We're not aware of any concerns out of the bird deaths," Dr Dodds said.

"Our advice stands ... that people should collect the birds using a plastic bag as a glove and deliver the bird to the Department of Environment and Conservation office."

The uncertainty has wildlife experts worried, with Dave Pettet from WA Raptor Rehabilitation and Education concerned that birds of prey such as eagles and kytes could be at risk if they pick up the dead or dying birds.

"If there's a poison going through, it will be a secondary possibility that the raptors will start coming into it fairly soon," he said. "I'm concerned that somebody is doing it on purpose and we need to get to the bottom of it."

Officials admit that they have hit a wall in investigating the phenomenon.

But Mr Fitzgerald said the deaths could be a result of the dry winter, which had caused algal and bacterial blooms in the Esperance Lakes Nature Reserves north of the town.

Esperance Airport recorded only 457mm rainfall in 2006. Its long-term average is 620mm.

The bird deaths pre-date last week's destructive storm, which led to the area being declared a natural disaster zone.

“Because we had a long dry winter the Esperance wetlands that surround the town, some have been slightly eutrophic, high in algal growths and bacteria,'' Mr Fitzgerald said.

“It’s possible the toxin has arisen from the eutrophic wetlands and somehow entered the birds’ food chain.”

The main casualties are all species that eat nectar and insects.

“Whatever is causing the deaths is not giving us very much indication at all,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

He said despite the thousands of carcasses, specimens suitable for autopsy were rare because the birds’ internal organs decayed soon after death.

The recent superstorm had cut roads, meaning autopsy specimens had to be sent to Perth by air.

“The constraint with sending birds for autopsy is they have to be as fresh as possible,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

“We have to wait for a bird that looks ill to die in the afternoon so we can courier it.”

Mr Fitzgerald said the first reports of birds dropping dead in people's yards came in three weeks ago. More than 500 deaths had since been notified. But the calls stopped suddenly last week, reportedly because no birds were left.

"It's very substantial. We estimate several thousand birds are dead, although we don't have a clear number because of the large areas of bushland," Mr Fitzgerald said.

"The birds are dying around sprinklers, water tanks, bird baths ... it seems as a result of them being ill. They're seeking water and they're dying around those water points.''

Birds Australia, the nation's main bird conservation group, said it had not heard of a similar occurrence.

"Not on that scale, and all at the same time, and also the fact that it's several different species," chief executive Graeme Hamilton said. "You'd have to call that a most unusual event and one that we'd all have to be concerned about."

He expected birds would return to the area once the problem was fixed but said it was vital the cause was identified.

Michelle Crisp was one of the first to contact the DEC after finding dozens of dead birds on her property one morning.

She said she normally had hundreds of birds in her yard, but that she and a neighbour counted 80 dead birds in one day.

"It went to the point where we had nothing, not a bird," she said. "It was like a moonscape, just horrible.

"But the frightening thing for us is that we didn't find any more birds after that. We literally didn't have any birds left to die.”

On Monday, Esperance, 725km southeast of Perth, was declared a natural disaster zone after 232mm of rain in 48 hours washed away roads, bridges and filled a harbour with sand.

Wow, Australia is in the news a lot lately. I have not heard about this and hopefully someone from WA might enlighten us with what they know. 232mm of rain in two days, we have not had that all year, we would love to have half that amount of water fall in the east. This is sad about the birds and I am curious to hear the explanation of why this is happening, they must be doing something bad over there, maybe this is why they have allowed it to rain so much, hoping whatever it is they are doing will be washed away.

Yes, it does sound like a lot of crazy things are going on down under. Weird things have been going on all over the world this year and it’s only begun. I have a feeling that we might be in for a wild ride this year. icon_eek

I wish I could send you some of our rain. It’s been raining almost everyday out here all winter. We haven’t had a measurable amount of snow this year yet. It’s the first green winter that I can remember ever having around here. It makes me think that this summer is going to be a scorcher worse than last year. icon_hot

The water situation is really getting crazy, we have enough water in our region to last until April 29. I really do not know what will happen after that, we are already on high water restrictions and I have learned to conserve water in ways I would have never thought of, that is the only good side of it, we have learned the hard way how much we waste of this precious resource. I wonder if they will let it rain or are their intentions to dry us up like they did in Africa.

I’m sorry to hear about all that, I’ve been hearing that you guys have been having the worst drought in 1,000 years. What would they have to gain by drying up Australia like they did Africa?

Richard,

The illuminati never do anything for ‘one’ reason, we have personally seen football field sized UFO’s take water from our lake – but of course the council had a reason for the dramatic drop in the lake. The government is rebating anyone who installs a rain water tank to their home – now they are talking about a tax on this water, this is ludicrous! They test populations and countries to see how stupid people are. We now have ‘water police’ -people employed to monitor homes with the water restrictions. Neighbors are dobbing on each other, creating people to be police citizens - part of their agenda.

We have dry storms, where there are the darkest clouds, incredible thunder and lightning but no rain – HAARP. All this is doing is starting new fires.

It really is about surrendering your power to the government, the government will come to the rescue and be the saviors of the day, with the change of government this year, and the number one philosophy of the NWO is ‘create chaos to control the order’. It will rain once all their agenda has been established, it is also conditioning the children to a drier climate, I could write all day about it. Australia has incredible energy with a great deal of ancient history and they need to overpower that energy. To make a one world nation, they must first establish government control to the countries that claim freedom! Countries that have never had civil war or experienced extreme conflict on their land, it is necessary for the energy of ‘victim mentality’.  Once you are a victim – you seek a savoir.

That does sound crazy that your government wants to tax rain water. It seems like if they push the people any further that they’ll revolt. People will only take so much and then they will turn on the government.

I remember you saying you had a pool, how are you able to maintain that with all the water restrictions you have?

Richard,
We get a little rain every couple weeks, and we have this giant sail over the pool which catches a big area and then works like a funnel, we also have a rain water tank so we keep it at minimal level. We are recycling every drop of water we can so I do not really find it all that bad. I actually would have never thought about saving the gray water before all of this and it is a good idea, – every problem has a solution, you just have to ride it through and it all works out in the end, no matter how difficult, any challenge only becomes too much if you let it defeat you. Now that I have been through this so called drought, I have realized how much we waste water and take it for granted, and everybody should be looking at recycling. I really believe the illuminati do us a favor at times with their agendas.

Yes you’re right about how much water we waste. Out here lots of people use underground sprinklers to water their yard and it always amazes me see the amount of people who leave them on in the rain. It can be raining like crazy and most people are too lazy to override the sprinkler timer and turn it off.

I believe you’re right about the Illuminati doing us a favor at times. It’s just like every time they raise gas prices people start looking into alternative fuels and alternative power.

Richard,

Alternate fuel will never be accepted, the illuminati will loose too much money. I personally know a man who is a mechanic and invented a car that could run completely on water, his life is now a shambles, he has been so heavily programmed and bombarded that I do not think he will ever come out of it. He has been in and out of psychiatric homes, electrified, labeled and destroyed. When you talk with him, you can feel his energy and all that they have done to him.

It is interesting how on one side of the world people can not be bothered getting wet to turn off their sprinklers, and on the other side we have no lawn to water, we have dust and dirt. The reality is that we are totally separated as a population. I often wonder if we, the hybrid reptilian/mammalian will ever live united.
