Why is it that a president such as G.W. Bush who has reached the status of being reviled in his own country is deemed a hero in Israel where he refers to the Israelis as "the chosen people"?

My take is: the Israeli's are singing "We got a friend"

My question about him is, why would he make reference to the Nazi's and talking to them before they invaded a country, while his family has the most ties to them? Especially being as unpopular as he is now? It's just stuck with me since I saw the footage..
