what is it? hydrogen dioxide or dihydrogen monoxide. i used to always know it as hydrogen dioxide but within the last year and a half ive noticed that the textbooks here in canada say dihydrogen monoxide or nothing on the h2o besides "water" and well.. "h2o." i have a feeling the newer textbooks are switching it up on the new "to be" adults. id like to hear what you guys know h2o as. thanks for your time

How much chemistry background do you have? The 2 used in the formula is a subscript for hydrogen not a multiplier for oxygen. If a subscript is used it relates to the preceding element, in this case hydrogen. There are two atoms of hydrogen bound to one atom of oxygen.

Dihydrogen monoxide hoax

"Dihydrogen monoxide" redirects here. For the H2O molecule, see Water (molecule).

Water consists of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.

The dihydrogen monoxide hoax involves the use of an unfamiliar name for water, then listing some negative effects of water, then asking individuals to help control the seemingly dangerous substance. The hoax is designed to illustrate how the lack of scientific knowledge and an exaggerated analysis can lead to misplaced fears.[1] "Dihydrogen monoxide", shortened to "DHMO", is a name for water that is consistent with chemical nomenclature, but that is almost never used.

A popular version of the hoax was created by Eric Lechner, Lars Norpchen and Matthew Kaufman, housemates while attending UC Santa Cruz in 1990,[2] revised by Craig Jackson in 1994,[3] and brought to widespread public attention in 1997 when Nathan Zohner, a 14-year-old student, gathered petitions to ban "DHMO" as the basis of his science project, titled "How Gullible Are We?"[4]

"Dihydrogen monoxide" may sound dangerous to those with a limited knowledge of chemistry or who hold to an ideal of a "chemical-free" life (chemophobia).[4] The only familiar common usage of the term "monoxide" is in the highly poisonous gas "carbon monoxide", and the simplified term "monoxide poisoning" is commonly used to refer to poisoning by this colorless and odorless substance.[5] Health officials frequently advise the purchase of carbon monoxide detectors to protect against this poison, which is sometimes referred to simply as "monoxide".

i think i figured it out. this dihydrogen monoxide was bad( supposed hoax) so they flood the net with the ban of hydrogen dioxide to bring bad attention to water. and surface this new water. dihydrogen monoxide. making us all drink it thinking its water. i mean its not that far out. they say our water is clean just because its clear. what about the flouride and salts in our supposedly clean water bottles? well i know the salts make you want more and well the floouroide kills AND stacks up. i think i figured it out. thanks for your help you guys

that was from a different forum.

It would not be hydrogen dioxide as that means 1 hydrogen and 2 oxygens. It would be dihydrogen monoxide. Pure water isn't good for us anyway as it strips the body. Not sure but there is a thread about it here somewhere about water xx

There also has never been a HO2 (Hydrogen Dioxide), it would be impossible to make this compund due to the make up of each element. Hydrogen has one 'arm' so to speak and Oxygen has 2 'arms'. To increase or decrease the number of arms would affect the polarity and/or actual element itself. I did a Chemistry degree years ago, never completed it, did Forensics too but for the life of me I've forgotten most of it!

so have most people. which is perfect for them to switch it up. who knows.

You really need to quit smoking sweetheart. I've only forgot because I don't use it. There has been NO switch up, it always has been and always will be H2O which is Dihydrogen Monoxide. I will state AGAIN that DIOXIDE means TWO Oxygens. There is only ONE oxygen in water and TWO hydrogens!
