Hi milipodium. Yes, I studied some of John Lash' work. 
The problem one encounters in this field is that there are differing interpretations/explanations and presenters out there that all claim to present what Gnosticism is, and has been essentially about. 
 
I personally cannot agree with a few things John Lash explains on some essential matters. 
John Lash doesn't explain Gnosticism like for example the Cathars did.

Well, nobody has the complete truth probably, and I would say that the complete nature of the situation we find ourselves as 'beings' is yet to be determined. ALTHOUGH, I do have my ideas and 'inner nous'. The above mentioned to stay in Gnostic ambience . lol

I think an important thing to do in this is consciously differentiating between matter and spirit.
