When I logged in an hour or so ago I noticed the topics number had changed to 667, however now it's back to where it was (this time I won't write the actual number).  How does this happen?

Reader, I just experienced the same thing. It went back from 668 to the 666 topics count.

Still the same count!  Maybe it's a test to see if we are paying attention to details.
