Jac, you shouldn't feel 'pity' for them. I've noticed this and I do not think it is really appropriate because it comes from a sense of being 'better than' rather than solely acknowledging that these two individuals are out of touch with anything real.
'Pity' is very tricky... It can fool the unaware (including yourself) that you are above the other person's 'low level'-ness when in fact it but masks contempt and even derision ('pity' never comes from compassion) towards those one may express 'pity' towards.
Knowing how you actually really feel towards the SS's, it would, IMHO, be much better to abstain from expressing 'pity' in order to make yourself look better when in fact, you may still (justifiably) carry rage, frustration and anger of having been conned and betrayed by the SSs.
